Duke Eugine Grimhall
Strange how everyone I don't like turns out to be a criminal, isn't it?
Obituary: Ship lost with all hands traveling from Grimhall Lands to Arx in early 1004 AR. Succeeded by Duke Dmitry Grimhall with no resistance. Unmourned.
Description: This morbidly obese man is almost of comical proportions. He's far too heavy for his diminutive height, and each time he waddles his huge pot belly jiggles hypnotically. His eyes are wide and violet, attractive on someone else, perhaps, but on him they just lend more strangeness to his appearance - they're almost too brilliant to fit in such a porky face - and bulbous, they bulge out of his head like bug's eyes. His chin sinks into his neck, fleshy skin gathered under there.
Personality: There's very few positive things that can be said about Eugine. He's a ruthless tyrant and makes no apologies or attempt to hide this very apparent truth. To say he revels in abuse of his power would be perfectly accurate, his lands thrive from an excess in thrall labor and whimsical punishments for perceived slights that goes far beyond the norm even for the high bar set by thrax. To say he's loathed by those he rules over with an iron fist would be an understatement and he's not even much respected by his peers. Despite this, of perhaps because of this, he's a shameless sycophant toward almost everyone he encounters and is quick to try and butter them up with flattery. Unfortunately he isn't nearly as charming as he believes himself to be and it's rare those around him consider him to be anything but unbelievably skeezy. He is, however, wise enough to know how to bide his time and wait and not overstep his admittedly impressive authority. If he's been offended, and unable is to have the cause of his offense immediately brought to heel, he's cool headed and is much more likely to make a mental note to destroy the perpetrator when the opportunity first arises rather than threaten or get angry. He's developed a reputation for being a cowardly little man who has never held a sword in his life and is known to "hide" behind his entourage of guards. The one thing that might redeem him in the eyes of his peers is the fact he's an absolutely brilliant wartime strategist and has never lost a battle that he's personally overseen. At least from the comfort of his armchair.
Background: As a child, Eugine had always loved Lording it over those he'd considered beneath him and this hasn't much changed as an adult. The first born son of the duke - he was destined to inherit and rule - and that he has. Under his leadership things went from bad to worse, not necessarily because of food shortages or financial hardships, but because of wanton acts of dickery that came from seemingly nowhere and had the more pragmatic members of his family shake their heads in quiet disbelief. The lands he oversees has a higher ratio of thralls than any other, and the freemen don't live much better.
During the Tyde rebellion his family was one of the first to come to the aide of the Thrax though Eugine himself, to the surprise of no one, did little more than hide in his estate and issue orders from there until it blew over and it turned out he'd backed the right horse. Though he continues to loudly boast that he was absolutely a keystone in their victory. He's recently moved to Arx to, in his own words, find people who he can make mutually beneficial trade agreements with. Cheapest labor and production costs in the whole of the Arvum!
