Lazarus Mercier
I pity the man who only dreams while he sleeps.
Obituary: As the Siege has gone on, frequent gossip has arisen at court about the odd feud between a well known merchant Lazarus Mercier and House Grayson. Most assumed nothing much would arise from it, that seemed to come from some dispute about grain and alcohol or... something? It's a little fuzzy, and most are unconcerned, but then two days pass with no sign of Lazarus Mercier, until his body is found in the Lower Boroughs near the dockside warehouses, with his throat cut. No witnesses of the murder have yet been found by the Inquisition, but they are hoping some will come forward.
Description: With a devil-may-care smile and aplomb not easily matched, Lazarus can be easily mistaken for an ostentatious prince at a glance. His hair is a stylish blonde tumble, and his cerulean blue eyes are bright with confidence. His face is oval in shape, his features soft instead of chiseled, but containing youthful comeliness which still draws the eye. His pale countenance is smooth and unblemished, likely not often exposed to the harshness of the sun or the elements and carefully kept immaculate.
Personality: Lazarus is a man used to getting what he wants and enjoying the finer things in life. As the eldest son of a wealthy merchant, his aspirations and desires are not unusual or unfounded. He was groomed from a young age to take up the business after his father, and he fully intends on making Mercier wine on par with the legendary wines of the Lyceum. He is used to being doubted; it only emboldens him more.
He lacks the experience of his father, but has the skillset which could very well get him to his goal with the right contacts. He has an innate sense of when to speak, how to speak and what to say, and when to keep quiet. Whether it is supplication, accusation, cajolery, exuberance, scorn, tears, complaint, and perhaps even the hint of threat - this talent can be used to manipulate, wound or dominate others when needed. Interjections are often anticipated before they could be spoken, and the few which are not are met with more amusement than annoyance.
Lazarus is health-conscious and very concerned with nutrition and hygiene. He avoids consuming meat and takes careful measures not to get inebriated which has sometimes earned him the scorn of his male peers (and it has ironically made him a lightweight). He has a slight tendency to be a perfectionist when it comes to his handiwork, but not to a crippling extent.
Background: Lazarus was the first son born to Adlai Mercier and his wife Lynda, born when his father's winery was at the height of it's biggest boom. As such he and his siblings are the first generation to never quite be touched by poverty and have spent their entire lifetimes enjoying the comfort of their manor situated in the Upper Borough.
The three siblings - Lazarus, Silas, and Bethany - were close as they grew up, in spite of being a collection of contrasting personalities. Lazarus was favored heavily by both of his parents and received the bulk of their attention and favors, even if they insisted they loved all their children the same as parents are wont to do. He did well in his studies and travelled alongside his father frequently to observe his business transactions firsthand. He acquired the ability to socialize strategically at a very young age, giving him yet another edge over his siblings when it came to arguments and conflicts. The resentment left in the wake of these quarrels grew as the years flew by and it is something Lazarus has slowly begun to reflect on and regret.
With his father's health beginning to fail, Lazarus has become fully draped in the family business. He makes frequent trips between Arx and the family farm located outside of the city and intends to mingle with his social betters. Idle hands do not get much done.
