Throwing Shade

The Lycene like to flaunt conventions, but even in doing so, pushing boundaries has very fine lines that they see as gauche to cross. The concern in the Lyceum over the instability of the King's Rest period was not seen as a reflection upon the leadership abilities of the different Grand Duchesses of the Lyceum. Archduchess Carlotta, Esera and Eleyna respectively were seen as strong, capable rulers who helped guide the Lyceum through a period of crisis, and while many in the Lyceum would concede that Pravus is waxing powerfully at present, it is extremely gauche to eulogize Niccolo and his star crossed wife as a means to cast aspersions upon a trio of three extremely capable, much respected rulers who led the Lyceum well before their tragic ends. The Lyceum being the Lyceum, there is concern about Arianna's white journal and trying to derive a hidden meaning behind it- is she daring to see if a rebuke is drawn from House Velenosa, and testing their strength? Most Lycene peers feel that as unwise, it puts her own house in a difficult position. Was it just extraordinary fondness for Deva, and she forgot herself? Did she have something personal against one of the Archduchesses, and was saying so now that she was safely dead? The behavior is seen as gauche, and will unfortunately feed gossip in the Lyceum for some time to come, which is saying something- more than one Oathlander grouses that the Lyceum has more gossips than the rest of the Compact combined, true or not.

Among other peers, who simply don't care about gossip and see even noticing slights like that as beneath them, it does raise a more important point- highlords should be honored, unless there was something profoundly wrong that is better off forgotten. Eleyna, Esera, Carlotta, and Niccolo performed their duties with honor during difficult times, and surely they deserve more recognition than they've received.
