A large venture into the Near Saffron Isles had met with a combined Gildorian and Shav slaving fleet which had ambushed elements of the Arvani flotilla, capturing three longships and over two hundred sailors. Shav scouts had kept the escaping Arvani ships in sight as they made distance and gathered the full strength of their far flung pickets: 21 craft (a caravel, three war galleys, and 17 longships) have gathered and chosen a position to face their foes in open battle. With victory, they can recapture their lost ships and fellows, as well as freeing large numbers of slaves and taking great plunder. With defeat.. well, if they're beaten, the Gildorian flesh-traders will land a fortune in prized Arvani slaves.

Hours prior, Haakon had taken a handful of longships to skirmish with the enemy's scouts, taking count of their strength and giving the rest of the reavers time to array for battle. Word came back to the main fleet: 19 enemy ships (a massive four masted caravel, 3 double masted escort craft, 2 Shav galleys, and 13 longships) were approaching. The Shavs on the front line in two divisions, the Gildorian sailing ships moving slowly in reserve, armored mercenaries glittering on their decks in the later afternoon light.

The westerly wind had grown weak as battle loomed, the galleys and longships of both sides having drawn in sails, preferring the more reliable power and greater maneuvering of oars. The site chosen for the fight was a place where the sea narrowed to just under a mile across. If these straits had a name, it was unknown to any Arvani or Prodigal.

Second verse would be same as the first, except Neilda isn't aboard a Darkwater ship; she bit her thumb and leapt for the Tempest, and so she's probably getting the world's fastest battle plan from Domonico about now. She mentions, pacing restlessly: "One of the men on that ship was /weirdly/ well-armored." A pause, then she admits: "And maybe drunk. I don't think it's a good plan to fight one-to-one, the numbers aren't good." She can do the basics! The basics.

Wulfrum is definitely on this ship somewhere giving commands, and Reve is also onboard too. Yes, absolutely. Because gods know that Azova can't command a ship like this - at least not yet. She's been spending her time patching up any of those who have already been wounded from being tossed about or sheer dumbassery (there's a few in every bunch).

Reese is here while adorned in her pink and ivory. The princess has her blond locks braided and gathered upon her head in order to keep them from being used against her in any possible fight or from drifting into her face and obscuring her vision. She is here with the Grayson ship. The princess is standing on the deck now, giving everything a close study and trying to get what insight she can.

Macda checked intellect + war at difficulty 30, rolling 12 lower.

Drake has returned to the Grayson ship. He's uninjured, but a little out of breath from beating a fighting retreat from the last engagement. He has no particular insight to the war at hand... naval battle perhaps, is not his strength. But he trusts in the wisdom of sailors on board. He removes his helm for a moment to let wind catch his hair as he squints into the horizon, preparing himself.

Thea has made her back to the Grayson ship. She's covered in blood and a bit tired. With a bit of a sore arm, since you know--Macda DRAGGED her! The Malvici is now running about, trying to see what to do next, all while checking on the others.

Macda helps her own ship with morale as she can "you got this, looking good!" she leans in to kiss Thea on the cheek as she passes her. "didnt you bring some salves?" she asks her eyes shifting slightly as the Princess manovers around the ship.

Reese peeks over to Drake upon noticing him. She then looks over to Macda and Thea. "Well their escape should be complicated if they try to feel with the low winds."

The Tempest eased around the Western flank of the Compact lines, its crew swelled by a complement of Darkwater Marines and Domonico nodded to Neilda at her words. "Indeed. Work with your comrades to flank and overwhelm them. You did good however to get the marines that you did off that ship." He raises his voice to the crew as he speaks.

"Remember your training. You are amongst the very best of what the Compact has to offer and we sail under the watchful gaze of Mangata as we travel her domain. We *shall* defeat the enemy and rescue our comrades. Secure the lines, prepare the sails and make ready for battle!"

Drake watches Macda and her interaction with Thea with a bit of interest. He's easily distractable from matters of war, it seems. No wonder his tactical acumen is still a bit lacking. But then he notices Reese looking, and starts paying attention to the battlefield more. "...Yes, complicated. So, we have them in a good spot then." Domonico's speech is heartening to hear, and he looks to what lies ahead with determination, his hand moving back to his sword. It's tasted blood already in this conflict.

The bulk of the enemy fleet is formed by Shavs, lured to Gildorian service by promises of reward and revenge, and in the grand tradition of hired soldiers, the Shavs are sent into battle first, each division a mob of longships surrounding a larger galley. The picket ships draw within bowshot, and the the calm before the storm slowly breaks.

The battle is joined.

Domonico drops Compact Naval Lexicon.

Thea listens to Reese, nodding her head in agreement. "I don't see it picking up either,"waving over to Drke with a slight smile. Looking over to Macdan, she snorts. "I ALWAYS have shit with me. But I didn't plan on losing my own arm either,"she jokes.

Thea wields Skystrike, the finely crafted diamondplate kopis.

Drake leads up the boarding action ... he's always been a bit more bravery than brains, so this is the part he's interested in. Action. As he climbs aboard the ship, he sees the man who looks like he's in charge... and with a cry, Drake rushes for him, drawing out his rubicund sword. There's a flicker-flash of red metal in the light, and Drake attacks the chieftan... getting a strike, if not a particularly powerful one on his first rush forward. But he's brave enough to keep at it, facing the man down in a duel. This is more deadly than a Champions duel... but it's also not a duel proper, because...he's got help on his side, and there's no rule against ganging up in warfare.

Drake wields Breath of Fire, a Rubicund Broadsword.

Seeing Drake leap into action, Thea herself springs into action. Watching as he distracts the chief leaves Thea the perfect opportunity. And she's an opportunist....Kopis in hand, Thea starts to engage the chieftan as well, her movements quick and sure. As they continue and fight, the Malvici general finds the perfect opening and pushes her blade foward, right into the belly of the beast. Or the Chief. You decide. Either or--blood goes splattering everywhere.

Domonico checked command + sailing at difficulty 50, rolling 2 lower.

Macda grumbles "Fuck, there she goes." and then Macda is following after Thea, as she goes in to stab the chief in the chest, Macda flanks kisses her knuckles and jabs her fist right up into the mans nose breaking it... whoops.. blood everywhere. And Macda chants "What can we say except your Welcome!"

Domonico calls for the hornblower to signal to the nearby longships, indicating his intention of closing with the nearest enemy ships, calling on the marines to prepare bows and ready to receive boarders when he realises that the enemy will manage to grapple.

"Archers! Hold! Hold! Loose!! Neilda! Prepare to repel boarders!"

Reese hears Domonico's words, doing her best to look over towarad him for the moment. She then turns to Drake, nodding to him. "A good spot." She says. The princess then works on getting the Grayson ship in best position to grapple the Shav gallery. She does well and they get in a great position. Reese is wearing pink dragon wings too which blow about in the sea wind. Sadly she doesn't actually fly.

Neilda takes orders better than she gives them, so an order to give orders is a favorite. She's fought with Domonico's men before; she picks a couple favorites, gives the casual, "You two, with me, starboard!" Knowing what to do is half the battle. The other half of the battle is the battle. It is a recursively large battle. They sweep the starboard side, and when Neilda spots someone topping the deck, she gives a growl as menacing as an angry Pomeranian. "Hey! You weren't invited!" she... complains. And because talking isn't her forte, she stabs him where, if he'd been smart, he'd be wearing a gorget. A problem solver.

The initial maneuvers are predictable, yet intricate, as the main battle lines clash together a d the ships of sail on each side begin to skirmish on the west end of the long formations. The battle remains very even, thus far, apart from some notable success in boarding by the Grayson war galley.

Reese boards the ship after the others and after she feels like she has boat in a good spot. The princess does seem eager for a fight though. She boards with her silvery pink blade drawn, jumping right into the battle and killing a nearby shav. She looks like a girl who killed before. Her expression is serious and focused. She kills him easily, having a sharp grace and good skill.

Domonico wields Warspite, an alaricite xiphos.

This is really a pretty typical thing to happen to Drake... he's pumping himself up for a duel for the ages, and then not one, but two women, rush in to either side of him and completely obliterate his initial target. All he can do is... laugh, as the chieftan is slashed and smashed. He looks at Thea and Macda both... "Good work." Then the shavs start to surround, and fight back with all their strength. One gets a good stab past Drake's sword defenses. It slashes under his arm... and, as fortune would have it, hits his cloak instead of him. The snakeskin slices, but his flesh doesn't... and that's a relief. It could've been bad. As it is, it's just expensive.

Something tells Drake he could be fighting harder here... he's holding back. There is the possibility of drawing his other weapon... but it's overkill, isn't it, to use an heirloom sword for human opponents? He always thinks so. He has a relatively injury free back and forth with one of the shav men, both keeping each other distracted.

A Gildorian dhow, it's weather deck thick with armored mercenaries boards the Tempest.

It would be super, super cool for Neilda to neil dat maneuver - the thing with the running leap at the rope to surpass a bunch of boarders, slice lines, make life o so inconvenient - but she snags on someone's shoudler, eats deck. Fortunately, this is exactly the sort of thing she's been training for - and she's ducking as she falls, rolling to the side and to her feet in a defensive crouch, out of the way of one inept strike and one that mighta hurt. Annoying. Very annoying. "GIL! BRIGBY!" she shouts. "WHERE YOU AT?" Domonico did tell her to flank and fight, after all, and his orders seem to work pretty nicely. She had her hair in a braid, and not her braid is a mess. They will pay the blood price.

The nautical melee on the west end of the line has become bogged down in a series of boarding actions and counter actions. Three longships of Mourning Isles freebooters try to swarm a Gildorian dhow, while another struggles with Tempest, the weight of numbers on its side. Across the front it is much like a land battle fought on two long lines of ships bound together. The largest Shav war galley looks on the edge of falling before the Grayson (and friends) onslaught, while several Shav longships have fallen to the reavers. In the enemy rear, the strongest ship in the skaver fleet, the great caravel, could turn the tide wherever it was deployed..

Reese looks over the deck, seeing that the fighters are largely taken care of. She looks over to Macda, Drake and Thea giving them all a nod. "Great work." She says before turning to the oarsman and any fighters who are down and still breathing. "I am Reese Grayson, General of Grayson, here aiding those of the Mourning Sea and House Eswynd. Do you surrender? If you are thralled we will be freeing you. If you took slaves you will be given a trial. If you do not surrender, we will do what we must." She says and her pink sword is dripping with drawn blood.

Still focused, gold-flecked green eyes unwavering, Thea makes her way around the deck. Her quick movements are sure as she one by takes down takes the shav down. With the help of Macda and Drake. "I'll check you both out after, yes?"her blade swiftly taking down men as she goes. She herself is a bloody mess, her hair becoming undone. Sidestepping the first attack and getting the second enemy between him and the first, he parries the attack and counters. Neilda is having a day of discoveries. Like, for example, "stab where the armor isn't." SO EFFECTIVE. Also, "be where the blade is not." She may evolve into an enigma, nay, a koan. Or she may menace brutish dudes who think her a terribly easy mark after activating DIMPLEVISION, and neatly shove her good buddy Gil aside so that Alvin McBrutehead goes sailing not-on-a-shop, but off a ship, through thin air, gargling his own fear as the sharks pick their teeth. She's grinning. Amazing! So good! There's a swo--oh! She ducks another sword, and adds "victory dances are for after the fight" to the mental tabulation of lessons learned. Gonna be a hell of a debrief. Who else can she NOT CUT and NOT BE CUT BY? Let's NOT DO THIS.

The collapse of resistance aboard one of the big Shav war galleys signals doom for the westernmost division of the Slaver battle line. With it's bulwark fallen, the Shav longships begin to try disengaging, and getting distance. ...But of the longships, only one Shav vessel is able to fight clear. The Redreef and Darkwater galleys have combined on the second Shav galley, making its collapse only a matter of time. Meanwhile, the reavers are swarming the remaining Shav ships, a handful slipping through the lines to threaten the Gildorian ships in the rear. Exchanges of arrows initially favor the Gildorians, but as a third and fourth longship slip through, the Eurusi admiral- far more merchant than war leader- looks aside and bids his trumpeteer sound the withdrawal. Only the massive caravel and a dhow can immediately answer, as the rest are heavily engaged.

Domonico is overheard praising Neilda: Impressive display of not getting hit. I approve.

Drake sighs a bit, and.. with some relief, and shakes a bit of blood off the sword. "I'm all right. At least my armor took all the damage, not a scratch on me." He looks at Thea, and grins at her. "All the ladies did a lot better at this engagement so far. I guess I'll be the one to follow behind a bit and watch and learn from you." His ego can take it, after all. Reese gets back to the ship and sails them expertly toward the Tempest to back up the rest. Drake seems to get a spring in his step here as he starts up the next attack. He leaps back into the fray. There's confidence to his strikes. For the moment, the bloodwood blade does behave like an ordinary strong sword. The strike is clean but not fatal. Not yet.

Haakon has rolled 1 5-sided dice: 5

As is the way of war on water or land, once the first cracks appear, it does not take long for a breakthrough to follow, and when it comes, it comes fast. The collapse of the Shav line is sudden and complete as various chieftains recognize that the battle is lost, and do their best to escape a handful manage it, but most are mired too deep, and must either fight to the last or leap overboard and swim for the nearest island, taking their chances with sharks, sinking, and starvation if the first two don't get them. Of the proud Gildorians and their Shav allies whi had moved into the straits by sail and oar a mere hour before, the flagship, one dhow, and three longships are all that will escape the grasp of the Arvani, today. Alas, once again: the richest prize has slipped through their fingers.

Aboard the Tempest, a foul smell will begin to be noticed once battle has settled. Coming from the hold of the two-masted dhow, where human cargo sits huddled in their own squallor, listening to the sounds of battle with wide eyes.

Reese got the Grayson ship in a good position for the others to board and she stays there until she feels the battle is decided, maybe getting ready to move if need be. Finally she boards. "You did good." She says to the others. "I guess we keep chasing though." She says, maybe about the ships that escaped them. She then sucks in a sharp breath. "And we need to get some care for those they captured." She adds, speaking of the captured probably.

"That'll be a good job for the medics," Drake says... getting a whiff of the scent from upwind. He winces at it, but... it's tolerable. He looks at Thea, and gestures to her-- "After you, my lady." There's just a hint of a tease there, but a medic's work is never done, right?

Neilda cleans off her sword, when the battle is done.

What? She... stabbed one guy, come on. Give her SOME credit. There is a pit-check that follows, and a look at Domonico, a look at the others. She hasn't been on so many of these sorts of engagements. She makes a face. "What's that smell?" she says. "Ugh. Someone... else can deal with that, right? We still need to get our people off the island. That's... way more my speed."

Thea wrinkles her nose at the smell. "I bet Ian's scarf smells worse,"she declares. Looking over at Drake, she smirks,"Oh--I'll follow you this one time..."nudging him foward.

Domonico is busy organising the rounding up of prisoners and getting the Tempest ready for sail again when Neilda comes across him. "We'll help with necessary food and medicine supplies first before anything else." He watches the big flagship before narrowing his eyes at it, "We may still get a chance at that beast soon."
