In the end, we are all reduced to Faith.

I hold my breath with the rest of Arx and visit the shrines one last time before the armies collide with our gates like the waves upon the surf.

The Griffon and the Serpent
Were fighting for the crown
The Serpent beat the Griffon,
All around Arx’en town.

Some gave them white bread,
And some gave them brown.
Some gave went hungry and unfed,
And withered to just bone and frown.

The sly little Fox, came upon the pair,
he bit at the Serpent and turned the fight,
The Serpent so surrounded, shouted 'unfair'!
But in the end, Griffon ruled the night.

I am very pleased. My efforts to raise money for the scholars and scribes of Vellichor with the bookshoppe have been very successful. I have transferred a great sum of money to the Archscholar for use as the Faith requires, funded a reorganization and expansion of the reading room, and now, continue to find volumes for the library. I have even managed to build myself a small office and sleeping area above the store. Beyond this, the faith meets all my needs.

The only profit I require is the enrichment of minds.

I do need a tutor for the Eurusi language, if anyone feels moved to teach.

Well, Valencia's Champion? I must see what I can do to keep this honor you bestow upon me.

I do not fear death. I have known battle all my adult life, and even before I was technically old enough to fight, when my tribe was splintered and broken. My only fear is what the world shall be if we fail. Oblivion. Emptiness beyond death.

We will not fail. We shall get it done.

I have always believed in the gods of the pantheon. My grandfather told me stories of them, even if they were rougher and different tales than I would later find in the Compact shrines. I thought I knew them, and yet to see them work in the world still takes my breath. But it gives me heart, as well, to know the gods are on our side. That our fight is righteous.

To the pantheon, I pray, on the eve of battle like I have never seen. I pray that I serve you as well as I can.

Limerance, place resolve in my heart, that I may draw strength from my knightly oaths and show protection and fidelity for my comrades-in-arms. Vellichor, grant me wisdom and a clear head in these hours of turmoil. Jayus, inspire my eyes to see not only the chaos and bloodshed, but the beauty found in acts of bravery and heroism. Sentinel, may each sword stroke be done with justice in your righteous caused, aimed true at the heart of your enemies.

To Lagoma, I offer my highest thanks for your Mercies that shall be on the battlefields, tending the hurts of the armies and keeping so many who might otherwise find their ends alive.

For Mangata, I raise a cup of cider and give my gratitude for the sustenance we've maintained during this long siege. I have not given up alcohol, I will confess, despite some odd calls to do so from certain highborn men. I hope you approve.

To Gild and Petrichor, I make a promise. That when this is done, I shall do my part in bringing order back to your roads and cities, and seeing your forests returned to health and beauty. The Bringers have corrupted your lands. The hands of men and women will have to work long to make them whole again.

To the gods I've prayed to little in my life, and still do not know well. I would know you better in the years to come. Tehom, let me look into the dark corners of my soul and find no reason to fear. Skald, the first choice, may the path I carve for myself end in victory. Aion, may your Dream continue, and may I create something worthy in it.

To the Queen of Endings, if this is your time to take me, may my soul come readily and gently into whatever waits for me beyond this life.

Gloria. All words seem lacking. I pray I am enough. That I can be worthy, in whatever honor and courage I possess, of what you may ask of me. That I can be more, when it matters most.

The siege weapons have been built, and we are ready for the assault coming. This is in my White Journals, so I will not mention too many specifics, all I can say is that we are doing our best. All we have to do is win.

The Crafters Guild is as ready as it can be, not to flee or head but to be there in the thick of it, ready to repair with hammer and fire, nail and wood.

Gods please, and Jayus most of all: watch over all of us, but watch over my people when danger is near.

Crafters: Please wear clothing that's comfortable and that you probably won't mind trashing to bits. I'm certain between the repairs and the rebuilding mid-battle, we are going to get messy.

If anyone needs extra hammers, for the love of Jayus, ask a blacksmith.

Relationship Note on Asher

Asher and I had the same friends growing up but we did not really know each other until after we were grown up. Never had the chance to work with him but know the guys that do. He's the sort of fella you want on your team. He introduced me to the Grayhopes and got me a part time with them. Very much appreciated.

Met the Sword of Sanctum. Quite a nice woman, we talked about swords and past battles a bit, made recommendations for a place to shop as well. Anyone reading this, I really recommend you to shop at Hana's Storied Blade.

It is strange to be so close to making life while surrounded by so much death. I understand the darkness that mires so many of my peers, I have dwelt in that shadow for most of my life myself and yet now, I find myself hopeful, and focused on tomorrows rather than todays.

5/24/1006 AR, during the Siege of Arx, I have completed a segment of my life. I have resigned from the Guild of Champions - and sincerely wish them well. The Champions have been my home for four years, and I have learned much from them during that time. I will always be there if they have need of me, for they are my friends. But that part of my life is done and it is time for the new.

As part of my new life, unburdening myself from the past, I hereby forgive Prince Luca for the slight of not inviting me, his best friend, to his wedding.

Today, on 5/24/1006 AR, the Gold Order of the Dragon is officially founded.

One way or another, it ends soon. This is an enemy that cannot be outrun, and thus I have not left the city. I will stay, and watch as we triumph over this foe, or are brought down into Oblivion.

The stakes could not be higher, our situation more dire. Triumph, or we lose, now and forever, past, future and present devoured into nothingness.

But we shall not despair, for from the depths come courage. We are not sheep meekly accepting our fate. We are cornered animals defending our home, a home that goes beyond merely Arx. We have been backed to a wall, and cannot, will not, take one more step back.

Brand has offered us a choice. Oblivion, now or later. The Compact will not be so generous. We offer him and his ilk the Abyss, now and forever.

People have been asking me what I'm going to do if we survive the siege.
I don't know.

I suppose once we're allowed outside the walls I should go look for Petrae. Or what's left of her, anyway. See if any of my things are still there.
After that?
I don't know.

Relationship Note on Armel

Of the people I expected to run into while carrying a bunny, Sir Armel was not on the list.

Everyone acts like the Knights of Solace are untouchable heroes. Legends even. They act as though Knights are not men but simply actors in a fairy tale.

Everything is always pretty, bright, and no innocents or good men go home harmed.

Sir Armel was a stark reminder that the rumors are far from the truth. He's clearly a capable leader and has done much for Knights of Solace as well as the city. But that same work has left a mark.

I think that I admire him more for that.

Sometimes I am tempted to drink some of the herbal brewed wines we stock. Organizing charity is much more stressful than I ever imagined.

Especially when every hour that passes is an hour I sit here in my shop wondering if any of my warrior friends have fallen in the siege.

I should make Princess Reese a bundle of supplies to carry with her. Something that she could perhaps attach to her steed.

For my uncle, something small enough that the dogs could carry.

Gods, if I start naming people this list will get too long. Why can't my friends have nice, safe hobbies? Like baking.

To the Faithful Reader:

As a general note, from here unto perpetuity, let it be known that my bird is off limits for all manner of bothering, harm, or molestation. If she attempts to pull out your hair to line the rather magnificent nest she has been building, it is permissible to gently (gently!) flick her beak. Otherwise, leave her be, under pain of my most acute disapproval.
