Relationship Note on Savio

And yet you are so many things to so many people, everything to at least one.
You know as well as I that the voices you hear around you know better than the ones in your head. I wish you'd listen to us.
You are Savio, not nothing.

I miss wintering in Bastion. But it is not the same Bastion.

Winter's here again, Scholar. I hate winter. I tend not to stir too far from home while the snow is on the ground - unless it's a trip to the Lyceum, at least. Perhaps I'll visit the Saffron this year, see how our friends are doing in their warmer, sunnier climes while Arx freezes solid.

At least the cold stops the docks reeking quite so much, and keeps the smell of the streets to something even the most refined noses can tolerate. In some ways, winter is a blessed relief - but I've usually got a scarf bundled around my face so I can't really enjoy the clearer air.

I find myself thinking deeply of late, on the nature of slavery, and of thralldom. I am told that there is an end to thralldom, when a debt has been repaid - but the one to whom the debt is owed is the one who sets the wages. I have read the writings of those who inherited the debts their parents owed. I have read the writings of those who owed because they were taken from their homes. I have read the writings of those who owed because their lord lost in war, and the writings of those who knew nothing of such debt until it was announced they owed it.

Be the chains of iron locked around the wrists and neck, or of silver locked around the soul, I can but conclude they are chains nonetheless. I would welcome conversation with those who have felt these chains and those who genuinely believe that such chains are the best possible path - but likely not at the same time.

A delight to have, once more, provided instruction in dance. Especially as the winter ball season will soon be dawning upon the city.

So very well put together by Princess Keely, Softest Aconite and the Whisper House. The short notice of finding the Princess Denica to teach alongside as the slow-slow-quick-quick-quick of the steps could be shown.

Those who attended, or didn't, and want further instruction or practice just need to reach out.

Much has changed since I last walked within Arx's walls, but my sense of duty is ever the same. I do hope to be of service to both my House and my chosen vocation, in such tumultuous times. But first...a visit to a party. Surely it can't hurt.

Well, I assure you that it can. I do say sincerely, that Lady Mabelle Laurent's honey festival was an amazing experience. But I am -so sore-. I can't recall the last time I had to climb -anything-, but I have certainly made up for several occasions' worth, I feel. While I was washing all the honey off, I discovered that those pins had pricked me in more places than I realized, and I have the most enormous bruise on my left hip. I also, apparently, managed to body-check a Knight somehow. I don't even know where that came from, but I admit that once that guardsman started throwing jars of honey at me, everything is just a haze afterward. I confess I feel a bit proud of myself, amid the mortification. The good lord did assure me that he would recover, however.

I cannot say the same for my dress, alas. I think I will just consign this to the flames, for it is not worth the maid's time to try to wash such rags, and I fear that my ears would be singed off if I overheard her opinion about having to do it.

...Pride, alongside embarrassment. Snowfall upon beautiful flowers still in bloom. The pain of a bee-sting balanced against the sweetness of the honey. Such are the dualities upon which I can reflect.

I wonder how long I will smell like honey?!

Research continues to be slow, so I set aside the hunt for pertinent information to read about cabbage; green, red and white. Unfortunately, the two leading scholars on the subject have conflicting views on whether it's a divine blessing of Petrichor able to cure nearly any sickness, or a culinary menace more subtle than Lycene poison. One scholar makes a convincing argument that it's only to safe to eat cabbage after its been boiled twice over, and cooked with fat of mutton or pork. Even thus prepared, he warns, it could still cause nightmares, excessive wind and be too difficult to digest for those of weak fortitude if eaten in quantity.

Since it hasn't yet killed me, I'm going to continue to believe it's perfectly edible but likely not a wonder remedy for all that ails us. I think a pottage of leeks, onions, cabbage simmered in a beef broth and seasoned with coriander is a perfect autumn dish, especially when served with a hunk of crusty bread. Best of all, nearly anyone, no matter their station can enjoy it.

Praise Petrichor!

I've a new project.

Fashion has always been my passion. Not because it rhymes, but it has given me an opportunity to leave an imprint of my choosing or so at least I'd like to believe.

We each deal with loss differently and I have been dealing with loss since I came to the city. Friends, family, and recently, loved ones.

House Laurent has collected some Heirloom items but they are not, I think, a testament to what it is today. I have decided I will design and have various crafters create heirloom items for House Laurent.

The first was presented at the Honey Festival this year and will move to our vaults, with a replica exhibited at the Dire Bee Lounge Gallery. It is a tiara, lavished with honey diamonds which will serve a future duchess, perhaps.

I dreamed that I was walking in the jungles of Dawnsend where the forest meets the sea, a secret lace-fern path that was and is my own. There red birds with curved bills sip the nectar from flowers high in the coral trees, and the steep, tangled roots and branches of the giant fig trees were as the architecture of a cathedral all around me, holy and alive. At the end of this path was a cove, where the rain-forest does not give ground gently with soft sand -- instead the waves crash powerfully against the black rocks. Some of the rocks are as big as a cottage, still with defiant trees clinging there against the salt spray, against the odds, against a certain fate. The sea is violent here against the beauty of the jungle and in every wave, every flower, is written with harsh and perfect peace -- you are nothing, you are nothing, you are nothing.

Then I woke up in Arx and it was snowing.

Fuck.

It was nice to catch up with family. To see what everyone is up to. But as everyone turned to more serious matters, it was still just as nice. Odd to hear yes? But we came together, to work out obstacles...as a family. And that is definitely an achievement.

I will mourn the day that I no longer look forward to the smell of butterscotch and freshly baked bread. It does make me wonder: how can such simple ingredients produce such a delightful result when combined and heated just right? I wonder what would happen if I added cinnamon...

Ah, ever the delight of curiosity.

I lost my friend. I mean, he's been busy. Marquis always are. But I remember the times when he was fun and easy to talk to. We had some not smart ideas you know. I already told you about the sauna in the summer plan. It was AWFUL, scholar. AWFUL! But funny.

The way he died, I couldn't imagine. I will be there to help the Stahlbens in any way I can. To stop whatever it is that's coming.
