The amount of things that are out of place after the journey from Setarco is unacceptable! Those sea-men are stains upon the deck! Better a pack of monkeys handle my alembics. A sextant was shattered, and those heathens are supposed to know what that -is-.

Moreover, my dry lysate of selenyte was wetted...WETTED.

If only they'd have the ill luck to open my scarlet-scab collection! Then they would have rued the ... well. Er. I don't suppose Arx would like a new outbreak. they leave that alone.

My patron has bid me to Arx, and I came.

She gave me the most wonderful task.

It's..unusual to say the least. The world has turned entirely upside down in so short a time, and now I find myself back in Arx. Moreover I am once more amongst family, and for the first in a long time I feel a meaning in that word. Harlan and Aislin, Olivia..most especially Cara. They are all so warm, so inclusive..well, okay, Harlan might not always be, but he bears a heavy burden. They all do for that matter, Aislin with the society, Cara as voice, Harlan in maintaining the Ashfords. I wonder how I can be of help, how I can serve and be a support rather than another burden unto them. I worry that years without one has left me unable to be part of a family. Lady Dawn asked how I was doing, and I had to confess my fear, that I worry constantly that I shall bring shame and embarrassment to these who have been so kind to me.

They say to be careful what you wish for, and that couldn't be more true. Sometimes what you wish for might just tear you apart. Maybe some things are just better left unknown. Hindsight is a bitch.

When before I met thee,
I not in truth, what I missed,
But with smile and repartee,
She takes me by agile wrist,
Muse, Lady, Lover, yet all three.
Not some casual spring tryst,
Shows me what might be,
When my lips she softly kissed.

Black Mountain is doing well. Very well. It has been enormously profitable. So much so that I have been able to fund several projects in Darkwater with the proceeds. This is very pleasing.

Also I got to go raiding.

That was fun.

Relationship Note on Lark

I have -- proposed to Princess Lark.

It is a logical choice. Of Grayson and its vassals, she is perhaps one of the smartest and most capable, which is what one should wish for in a familial addition. She is a Minister and now Voice of House Grayson. She clearly holds the trust of the Lady Regent, based on her place within the party to the Twilight Court.

And she is -- attractive. In a particular way, perhaps, but she is certainly not objectionable to look at.

I would...prefer not to put myself forward. I don't know what I'm waiting for, if not a match with a clearly intelligent partner who has much to offer Gemecitta. Whatever my feelings, my mind knows full well that the one match I would make for myself will never happen. No matter everything else. Even if the king were to suddenly awake. The number of changed circumstances that would make such a thing possible... No. Perhaps if she felt for me the way I felt for her, it would be different. But no.

Princess Lark is a sound alliance, and I am the most worthy candidate to offer her.

She is -- considering it now. She did mention that perhaps some attempt at romance would not go amiss, which is ridiculous. This is not a romantic proposal, and I had sized her for a more practical woman than that. Still, I visited a bookshop and a jeweler and found items I believe to be appropriate. It is little enough to sacrifice.

I suppose now I simply wait. It is an aggravating feeling.

It has been a long year and two months spent here in the Capital. I've made a great many mistakes, learned the hardest of lessons, and won and lost the most cherished of things all in the breadth of a few months. Some bridges are left in smolders, while others are forged of the strongest of iron and steel.

I could claim that I regret my mistakes, but I would not be stronger and wiser without them. I can only ask for forgiveness for them and tarry no more. It isn't the past that my thoughts lay, but here in the present as I look to the future of things to come.

Relationship Note on Calypso

Now we're tied for the all-time dueling record. I'm impressed at the amount of time she's put into her swordsmanship while still balancing the responsibilities of command. Every time we meet in the ring, it's a contest of endurance, as we seem to be very evenly matched in skill.

If I'm forced to practice swordsmanship, playing about with the Lady General seems about the most pleasant way to do it. She's direct, and all about business.

Work continues on the Gauntlet. We've finished the rest of the work on the Tower for the moment, so now I can focus on the military grounds. Hopefully, this will give us a more solidified presence here in the city once we've finished the construction. Should save me the time of walking all the way over to the Malvici's place to practice, too.

Relationship Note on Leo

Duke Leo Fidante is headstrong, which is a nice way of saying he's a bit of an asshole. Yet, if he is an asshole, he is nevertheless an asshole dedicated to the protection of the Lyceum, and I could not fault any man for that -- headstrong, or otherwise. He has cloaked himself in honor, and sworn himself to duty. He would give his life for the people of Tor. I could ask no more of Duke Fidante -- yet I may still.

It has been an eventful week. So much blood, so much slaughter.

It's not going to get better.

No. It's going to get worse. But at least going forward, we are organizing.

Relationship Note on Edain

You came to me, when I first arrived in Arx, and you asked me to rebuild the burnt bridges between the Lyceum and the Oathlands. I thought you were naive. I thought you were a fool. So much hate, I thought, could not be undone.

Now I am the one undone, my world changed. Now, anything seems possible. I do not know if we can build those bridges, Edain, but we will try. For the the sake of our people, and the Compact we all serve, we will try.

You are my Light. You are probably also still a fool.

Sometimes you have to be patient and let the foul wind run its course.

Sometimes you should steer into the wind and reinforce your bow.

Other times you should just sit at home and not bother with any wind at all.

Foul winds always come and go. In the Salt they usually don't last long when it comes time for war. These things sort themselves out.

The body count has increased to hundreds in the last month. I feel like I may be slaughtering more people by sitting in Arx and going out to reave than by spending the seasons out in the Salt.

I suppose this speaks more to current circumstances than anything else.

At least it pays well, still...

It has been quite some time since I've taken up my quill and a piece of parchment to write a journal for myself, rather than transcribing the wishes and thoughts of others who come to an archivist for their own journals. Some might call the duties of a scholar rather droll, or to commit one's self to transcribing what we discover to parchment with ink and quill, rather than to wield a sword and take up a life of exhilaration on the front lines of battle.

To those that have that opinion, I do not blame you. I simply quote to you the words of my dearest Papa, who has been the catalyst of my success during my trials to become a disciple worthy of serving Vellichor: Without the archives, what do we have?

We have no past, and no future. The access to the archives is a key of wonders and miracles, glimpses into other lives, religions, experiences, the hopes and dreams and strivings of all lives, and it is this key that opens our eyes and hearts to the world beyond our front doors, that is one of our best hopes against tyranny, xenophobia, hopelessness, despire, anarchy, and ignorance.

I hear that Prodigals are growing in number within Arx. I am pleased, but (naturally, given my tendency to over-think matters, most especially good news), I cannot help but wonder quite what might lie behind these reports. Are there truly more who have made the journey here? If so, it might speak to the severity of the assorted crises facing the Compact. Or were most already present, but now feel better-able to dress and speak as they feel themselves to truly be? That might speak rather more to a growing acceptance within the Compact, which I think is all the more needed in these troubled times.

Relationship Note on Eirene

We are both of an age in which the formative years of our lives were filled with the war between Tor and Southport. A decade and more later, we worked together with others against a threat that menaced a city neither of us called home. But to a cause. To a purpose.

I cannot say that we will always see eye-to-eye on matters, but that we speak? That we find ground common enough to us both that we can come to an accord? I respect this medic and commander of House Malvici.

I sat down with Count Maximilian at his keep in Arx because if there is anyone who can get the job done is him and his Darkwater Watch. The man served with Victus but back then he was just a boy and I regret not paying more attention to him because the result of his experience and skill is a Count who anwsers to no one and with his company, the Black Mountain, he is able to move assets at an incredible pace. Something that I strongly appreciate concerning my business is always fighting against time. Through him, I made contact with Lord Darrow - the Knight of Sorrow and a man who just recently had sailed alongside Prince Abbas. Lord Darrow did not hesitate to give me his assistance. The same can be said about Inquisitor Halsim. The man is a genious when it comes to operations and I hope to learn allot from working with him. Master Felix is another great example of what Thrax has to offer. Not only is he a master of his craft but his influence extends to nothing short of artists when it comes to shipbuilding. This fellow he reccomended and saw moved to Escuma for the construction of my ship has been great to work with and I feel that will continue to be the case.
