Recent life lesson, recorded in the event it slips my mind: Don't have any expectations. Then you'll never be disappointed, and only occasionally pleasantly surprised. DON'T FORGET.

For those that are confused, let me explain to you what Guildmaster Joscelin's intention was when she made me her voice. There are two voices in the guild, Assistant Guildmaster Ida who represents the crafter's block and I, Assistant Guildmaster Lazarus who represents the merchants' block. That does not mean that a crafter from the guild can not come to me requesting aid. On the contrary, any member of the guild has my complete dedication should they want it. What my position allows is for merchants to voice their opinion and concerns. Merchants who sale the crafters' ware. Merchants who close deals to ensure that the crafters' goods make it to their clients and their goods' worth is not hinder by court's politics because it is protected by the city's top merchants. Crafters are the river's water and salmon, merchants are the current.

This journal entry is a stick-figure image of Maximilian, (Denoted by the pirate hat and a wine-glass in one hand) watching Lazarus (An angry 'male' stickfigure, with #@!$! as his dialog, labeled as 'L') and Myrinda (A female stickfigure, arms crossed and a frowny face labeled as 'M') as they argue back and forth, by throwing books at one another.

The Caption reads: "And they said this city was boring..."

I am not going to waste my time with dueling Myrinda. Etiquette suggest that I am in the wrong should I reject it. Ok Myrinda, you are right and I apologies. You are not a hag and your clothing is not trash. Congrats, you won. Won what? Not sure.

It seems that Lazarus Mercier is a coward who isn't willing to defend his words. Thus, he knows that he is wrong.

Never let it be said that Myrinda Grayhope is a criminal nor that my clothing is anything but top quality.

My response to Myrinda's challenge;

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH HAHAHAHAH HAHAHAHA HAHAHAHA HAHAHAHA.

To accept your challenge is to admit that you are worthy of the duel. Which you are not so go home. In response to Thrax wearing your crap; they're Thrax, they can wear whatever they want and I am pretty sure they do not care about my opinion. If they did I would recommend various other crafters who are better verse in the craft.

Relationship Note on Donrai

The Thraxian High Lord Donrai himself, with his twenty different titles that I can't name off the top of my head, wore /my/ work to the Assembly of Peers.

So, Lazarus, it appears that you know nothing, hm? You will also answer for calling my work trash! I do formally challenge you to a duel. For both implying that I am a criminal and calling my work trash. Choose your champion and I will choose mine, and we will settle this.

If maybe Myrinda was clearer in her journal entries we would know what the witch wanted. To think that being blacklisted from her store affects me the slightest is comical. I would not be caught dead wearing her clown outfits. You will pay your dues, like I pay my dues, one way or another if you wish the support of the Guild. That is our responsibility as members. No one can tell you who to trade with or whom not to. If you wish to open your stores and even offer discounts to Lord Victus then that is your inalienable right and I would continue to do my part to ensure that right is not taken away from you. My job and my goal is a free market unhindered by the politics of court. Now, I know a thing or two about the Thrax and they do not wear your trash. Stop wasting my time.

Also, boyo and all you others, I am and always have been an upstanding citizen of this fine city. I will be contacting a Champion for your implied insult that /I/ would be a /criminal/.

Relationship Note on Lazarus

Child, I do not know who taught you to read, but never once did I wish for a position of prominence in the guild. I have my own patron; I see to my own needs; I have never asked anyone for anything.

I do not need the nonsense that comes with the guild nor a high position in it. Nor do I need your nonsense. I won't pay dues to any guild that has a child like yourself high in the organization, who thinks he knows anything about what it's like to be a /true/ crafter.

For that matter, consider yourself banned from my shop.

For that matter, consider Lord Victus' ban lifted. I invite the bastard lord, actually, to come seek me out for some heavily discounted bit of clothing. Whatever he would like. If Joscelin will work with someone so closely who hates me so, then I shall do the same!

Relationship Note on Orazio

Well. The Archlector who got up and invoked the invocation- heh- I wondered why he looked so damned familiar. Orazio Saik. Or was a Saik. We knew one another back home; he was a good soldier but his heart wasn't in it. Not surprised he's following Sentinel. He was pretty vocal about the Tee-Ess war and how it was stupid as fuck. Not that I disagreed...

Remind me to look him up. All this weird shit reminds me of something he should know- as a follower of Sentinel and all.

Relationship Note on Valkieri

Lord Valkieri Rubino - Of the city state Gemecitta

I had the wonderful opportunity of inviting Lord Valkieri in to my home the other day. He is a very pragmatic and practical individual. Seeing things logically gives him an advantage and an edge over those who throw their weight in emotionally. He was guarded and weary of me on approach but I think we've started to develop an understanding of one another. Though, I was starting to wonder about half way through our conversation if the man had any passion in him what to ever. As it turns out... he does.

I look forward to more interactions with him and the rest of the fine people in this city from Gemecitta.

Relationship Note on Dawn

Lady Regent Dawn.

I looked at her, immediately surrounded by messengers and well-wishers after the proceedings had ended, and there was a moment I felt sick.

It's not that I ever expected to wed her. It's just that the chance is so very, very far from me now. Even if it's what she wanted and she was determined to have it, I'd have to abdicate my inheritance, and that -- is not something I can fathom.

And she wouldn't want me. Not enough to overlook her duty.

Dawn will marry someone for the exact right reasons of someone in her position. She will marry whoever will provide the match that will most benefit Arvum. Someone from one of the Great Houses, perhaps, or...

Or. I read the treaty as well as anyone else did. I understand the implications.

She will wed someone appropriate, and I will wed someone appropriate, and that is the end of it.

It hardly even matters, Valkieri. She does not care for you. You are the biggest, most obvious idiot in Arx. Let it lie.

And so it is done.

I admit myself surprised that no one brought forth an alternative for Regent. I had several scenarios running around in my head that I felt likely; ever since Dawn told me that Esera had promised her support, I've been suspicious.

And yet it all went off -- uncontested. I'm almost disappointed in a strange way. Not enough to complain, perhaps, but enough to feel...unsettled by how events transpired.

And of /course/ Cara has managed to finagle permission to join the messenger party. Of /course/. I've had to lower myself to sending a letter to the Archduchess begging for my own place just to keep an eye on her.

Ridiculous.

Relationship Note on Myrinda

Clearly Myrinda was not chosen for the position because she can not even understand the guild's most basic concept. A crafter has the guild to provide them with support and protection. Both things commoners may lack without a patron. A merchant's job has always been clerical in nature, we trade the crafters' ware, we collect guild dues, ensure that our crafters are being protected by the law and deal with any damage control or diplomacy required to push the guild forward. That a merchant be given the position of assistant guildmaster is only natural as we are better suited for the responsibility. If Myrinda thinks that 1. she can do a better job or 2. that we would let criminals control our coffers she needs to go visit the Mercies because she is clearly suffering from old age.

I rather dislike feeling behind on things. I do not mean the political doings and such of the city - I leave that to those who like to navigate such things. My commissions, my plans to meet up with people... I feel like there are just not enough hours. I'll find a way, though. I always have in the past. I long to have leisure enough to manage a few brawls in the training center again. It has been dreadfully long since I've put fist to flesh and skills to the test. Too long, really.

I really need to meet more people. Problem is, people are stupid. I'm trying to meet the one person referred to as a barber surgeon in town so I have someone to talk to who isn't a Malvici retainer.

What do I have in common with people I can talk about? Huck all if I know.

I find myself wandering the city looking at shops and ancient monuments and finding the taverns I might be comfortable in. But I am seeing a lot of history which -may- be useful. Like perhaps there's clues in our past as to what the huck is going on with the present and these elves. The city dates back (mostly) to Alarice's war; I doubt there's much left from the original Reckoning. Isn't that what the Nox'alfar referred to it as? The first time the demons attacked and we retreated to Arx for protection?

Oh that reminds me - we need to talk to the outlying farms and storehouses about getting food brought in. We should be preparing for a siege - tear up some of those pretty pointless gardens and start growing crops and herbs. Onions, lettuce, leeks, garlic... all of them will grow through winter so we can start making sure we have supplies. I should talk to Caly about this. I don't know how much land management she's ever been bothered with learning. I may have to write to Hadrien about it instead.

Everything is f'an sideways. How we went from talkin about working together and creating a tighter compact to what elves worship is beyond me.

Tha Valardin seem tah have a mind for this though. Tha princesses seem open tah tha idea ah workin together. Everyone is so f'an worried about their house secrets gettin stolen, spirits, I'd rather worry about tha f'an abandoned than tha other houses. Thought that was tha whole f'an point ah tha compact?

Still, it seems like there are people willing tah work together. Slow steps. And if I turn out right about my theory I'm going tah start gamblin cause I'll be tha luckiest man in tha f'an compact. Still want tah know what goes on in those deep places. Tha prodigal scout, tha velenosia princess, any other prodigal or scout or explorer I can find. They're tha ones tah talk to.

Dammit, Darren and Fergus were supposed tah deal with all this shit, I was just comin to tha city tah drink.

I like this Lady General. She is hard working but she is also good company over drinking or sparring. I hope she will keep me in mind when she has need of scouts in the coming actions, if my House permits.

Redrain Prince, brother to Freja and Fergus but doesn't think well of his older brother apparently. I met him while drinking and we seemed to get along well enough after looking each other over. We seem to have a few things in common.
