Relationship Note on Fergus

Bastard hits hard. I feel a little bit of sympathy for anyone who seriously tussles with Ferg. It makes me glad that we're on the same side, now if I can just get him to teach me to fight properly...

Brutus, the first of his name, was the tamest of hounds one could hope to meet, old by the time I was learning to walk, and so lazy that he often only stared at his food until someone moved the bowl closer. When he died, it was some hours before anyone realized anything was amiss.

Brutus the Second was a more tenacious bastard. He chased anything that would run and had an incredible drive to hunt. Misguided hunt was the end of him, bested when his bravado set him against a bull.

Brutus the Third was a sturdy bitch, and slung a number of litters before her time ended, a nanny to child and puppy alike.

Brutus the Fourth was as dumb as a rock after being kicked by a horse, and spent his years walking sideways and bellowing at phantoms.

Brutus the Fifth was an unshakable rock, and the first hound to accompany me into battle. He fell to an arrow and was trampled into the mud so thoroughly that there was little more than teeth and armored collar to retrieve by the end.

Brutus the Sixth could track a man for miles. She fell to shavs, but took a number of their savage throats with her.

Brutus the Seventh, I can't say what happened to him. He was prone to roaming and exploring, and his loyalty extended to the last hand to feed him. I imagine he is sleeping at some warm hearth on a farm somewhere along the Lyceum-Valardin border.

Brutus the Eighth is growing old and gray. He lost a leg to an enemy blade, but was far too stubborn to die. His joints are stiff and he could not make the journey to Arx on his own paws, but he came with the soldiers this past week in the supply wagons and I am happy to have his quiet company again.

If I never see another messenger, it will be too soon. The last one to bring me something that was something other than more work or questionable news has been forgotten.

The planning is done and the troops for the exercises are either arriving or being assembled from those already present. I am pleased with the number of houses that have commited their soldiers to the exercises to display the continued strength of the Compact. The next week will see soldiers from all corners of Arvum gathering to teach and learn from one another. I am looking forward most to working with the cavalry units. My first wartime battles were embarked on to the sound of thundering hooves and if fate is kind, that is the sound that will accompany the end of my military career.

The exhibitions and demonstrations will take place throughout the city - training grounds, tournament grounds, beyond the walls, and more - and it is my hope that even those not entirely interested in the techniques being made study will find some entertainment in watching these small spectacles as they come across them. I imagine the taverns and markets might find some boon for the activity as well.

Relationship Note on Darren

When I first made the trek to Arx, I assumed our relationship would continue as it always has - friends who occasionally make a ruckus at the bar. Only occasionally. I swear.

These days we are closer, griping to one another just as much as we confide. It is a comfort knowing I can trust him wholly. I didn't know what I would find when I left Farhaven to come here, but my fears are laid to rest.

Relationship Note on Hildegard

I have always known of her, of course, as anyone should know their cousin's names. Can't say I've gotten to know her personally. I saw her the once, when Deva and I well...we had an 'impromptu' bonfire that her brother's things happened to be kindling for. I haven't seen her around much since then.

Relationship Note on Calypso

There rough stones, that once polished turn into the most radiant gemstones. The Lady looks as though she is working backwards. Gorgeous, gracious with her presence and kind words, yes, but still the 'tough' 'tude looks more an act than I could write. She is a good wine-pusher, when someone else isn't trying to push it for her or tell her how to market her own product. She may have called that a smirk, but I think that is the only way she knows how to smile.

Relationship Note on Edain

Some people are romantics. They think of knights and stories and imagine the real world works that way. Edain is someone with the power to make the world conform to literature, if he plays his cards right.

Relationship Note on Pietro

I would never tell Pietro that he is my favorite of the twins, but only because I think he would argue with me that Vincere is clearly better. I'm very glad to see him, though, and he cheers me up just by being nearby.

Relationship Note on Vincere

Dear Vincere. I've missed having him to talk to -- Aislin shares my affection for historical research, but she is often off on adventure, and it is not quite the same as someone you've grown up with. I'm so pleased that the Igniseri twins are in Arx; it is a comfort, to have good friends near these days.

Relationship Note on Aurora

I'm quite grateful that I was finally able to cement my patronage to this phenomenal seamstress. I almost feared someone would beat me to the punch, but Aurora agreed after a long discussion in her shopfront while she worked on another piece for a customer. Truly, I am blessed to have not just one, but two wonderful proteges. I look forward to watching her thrive like I know she will in the coming days.

Relationship Note on Freja

The Princess was a pleasant companion the other evening. She answered several of my questions in an open manner, which I appreciate. I am thankful for having the chance to learn some more of the ways of the north. I can only hope to have further opportunities to speak with her on these matters.

Relationship Note on Freja

Princess Freja has made a good impression for her people, and I am hopeful that we continue to show that the Faith and the North can work together. I will be assisting her over the next weeks in honing her ability to scout in a different way. She will learn to hunt knowledge, not just animals and shavs.

Relationship Note on Salazar

Never has the South seen such a vivid array of plummage, the colorful bird puffing out its chest and gracing us all with its presence and generosity. Plenty of self-plucked feathers in his cap, this one, along with that illustrious and conversation piece headdress he had. Such a fine pirate of he can sail on any wind, and in any storm. And if the gales fail? I am certain he can sail thrice around the world with the hot air from his lungs.

If I ever find need to kill myself, I'll simply climb his ego and jump to his intellect.

Relationship Note on Aeden

Aeden Grayhope, Prelate of the Black, is as sharp a mind as the Scholars have ever taken into their rank. The vigor and zeal with which he pursues his duties is commendable. Great things will come of this one, should he not let his drive and motivation blind him to the pitfalls in his path. There has been more than one occasion when I have had to speak to the Censor at length, reminding him that the entire tradition of the Prelate of the Black is to argue against censoring. Aeden does this quite well. Should he ever fail to argue, we will truly know a piece of knowledge is dangerous.

Or that it is time to find a new Prelate of the Black.

Ah. Was I ever this young? Did I ever argue with his passion?

I have tasked the Prelate with wandering the Burroughs and hearing the voice of the people. If he believes that knowledge should be shared to make us all stronger, than I want him to know what the people are curious about. If we are the caretakers of the people, then we should know what they want and what they need. It is learning to tell the difference between the two that takes real wisdom.

Relationship Note on Blacktongue

The Blacktongue. What a disgusting nickname. But all too true it would seem. I met up with Blacktongue in the Hundred Cities Inn and he told me the story of how his tongue got so black. Food tasting is serious business.

Ever sense the accident, however, he has taken up a new role in the House of Velenosa as a sort of court jester. He spent a good solid hour or more trying to make me laugh. Prat falls and cheep tricks might work on some but I require a slightly darker sense of humor. He did manage a smirk out of me, but lets just call that one a pity-smile. I imagine he'll have many more opportunities to try the tricks of his trade on me. He makes excellent drinking company.

Pirate Lord meandered into my shop to discuss payment for his commission. His silver-tongued personality is reminiscent of another person I know, but conversing with him was enjoyable. His wine ain't half bad either, but it's not whiskey.

Relationship Note on Salazar

Wine merchant? Pirate? Unsavory swindler? I'm not sure which of these best describes Lord Salazar, perhaps all three. I'm not fool enough to trust him and not complacent enough not to indulge in risky yet entertaining conversation with him. Who knows what the future will bring but if looping in the Southportian wine trade with his endeavors means profit for the Malvici family, I'm all for that.

Profit means I get more funding for the armies of Southport. And that's a cause worthy enough to suffer his horrible puns and ridiculous hat. A man to keep an eye on for sure. I'd rather have him as an ally than an enemy.
