Brother Oswyn held another very informative research session with the scholars. It is so nice to get together and share your passion with colleagues. Thanks to he and Tarik I have embarked on whole new stream of research about which I am excited

I'm not above bribing half the Lowers to secure a romantic evening. A person will get drastic after a few months.

I'm not saying I did this.

But I would. Absolutely.

Count Drake had one of the best Gauntlet runs I've had the pleasure of seeing, but Sir Bhandn, Countess Thea, Sir Corban and Raven all did exceptionally well. It was a rather fun time and I can't wait to see what happens at the Equestrian Course!

Relationship Note on Domonico

The Malvici trio. That is what we were known as. We each had our own talents and there wasn't much we couldn't do when we were together. But now we're down. My brother, my middle that acted older brother is now gone. Not being out at sea, not with a sword in hand. By an illness that none of us could figure out how to cure. This isn't how you were supposed to go.

My brother was surprisingly patient with me growing up. He taught me how to swing a blade. How to use my feet. If you knew my brother, you know he was always yelling, "FOOTWORK!" He was my protector when I felt that I could very easily take on all the boys when I was little. I didn't know until later, but he went after them after I came back. He was stubborn and rarely laughed, but you knew that he cared about you if you were in that circle.

The Malvici trio is missing one. It won't be the same. I don't have any more words, at least none that will make sense. I've rambled enough, which is unlike even me.

So, the initial planning has been made. There is a group of us that want to rebuild the roads within the Lower Boroughs. At first one may think, "why?" Well, the answer is easy.

1. Make it so merchants have an easier time getting back and forth to the docks, thus increasing trade and profit for the city at large.
2. Increase safety of the citizens that walk back and forth. (Just as long as they remain on the main road.)
3. Increase the defensibility of the area simply by making it easier for people to respond to any threat.

I am worried that many in the Lowers may balk at this. But, just like the library, I am sure they will be much happier once they realize how much it will improve their lives. However, we have to get permission first. You don't get to just tear up miles of streets without permission from it's liege! Once permission is obtained, then I will draw in the Commoners Council and various commoner families. Honestly, this project will benefit so many people both great and small. First, to receive permission.

In honor of those casualties at Bastion, in honor of those many victims both living and dead, I urge my fellow nobles to join the Heart in Hand charity with me. Together, we can do more.

That doesn't mean we can change the past. But perhaps we can ease some suffering, and in the meantime, make our world a little better for everyone.

I know I am but a minor noble, but I sincerely think that the more people we can help, the more rebuilding we can do in Bastion and elsewhere necessary, the better the Compact as a whole will be.

I got a terrarium from Sister Brigida, made of glass and with tiny plants thriving in it. She said it reminded her of me and to take care of it. So thoughtful a gift.

Another friend, ally has died. He has led troops to help defend Saikland, taught our sailors to be more competent and offered sound advice. He did not go as I expected him to go, sword in hand battling enemies but from illness. And now am too sad to write any more.

I won't have a legacy.

I probably won't, unless Pravus suddenly needs a redundant princess to ally with some far-flung Barony on a piece of land that we'll lay claim to eventually. Only then. Maybe then my feelings will change - maybe they won't. They probably won't. I don't want one. It's not indecision, no. It's not indifference either. It's acceptance of a fact that I have made myself quite content in not having a legacy.

Not one that's related to children, at least.

The legacy of a blade, of a Sword, is different -- isn't it?

This gleaming line of alaricite, the most noble of metals worked exquisitely, this heirloom. It's as much my body as left hand is, when drawn, and it's seen not only my blood -- but others. Drawn in honor, drawn in defense of family and House. It feels like birth, not in a physical sense, but in the mind. It's transformative. In place of an heir, it's an heirloom, and there will be a point in the future -- near, distant -- where that Sword will need to be passed onto the next, for them to inherit. I think about whom I envision holding this blade. I hope that when the time comes I might have a name. If I'm lucky enough, skilled enough, stubborn enough to survive and outlive this sword to see a Sword's retirement.

(Gods, that sounds so fucking dull, doesn't it? Retirement.)

I don't look upon my children and realize that I want to create a better world for them, provide them all the opportunities the world has to offer and marvel at their open-eyed, open-minded view of the world. (Such innocence, such trust. I will make a spectacle out of being an aunt, L.) I don't have that, I don't want it, and when I look upon myself -- my reflection in a mirror, or in flashes of alaricite when I have Twilight's Edge in hand -- I really like the idea of wanting to create a better world for myself. To provide myself with all the opportunities of the world, and marvel at everything -- everyone with open eyes and an open mind.

So, I do.

I'll fight for that, for life -- for living and sailing and drinking and fucking, for singing work songs with the crew by each sunrise and for knowing that each evening will see me fed and comfortable and safe -- for being selfish.

I'll fight for me.

After House Velenosa, House Redrain was slated to host the Assembly of Peers. I take no shame in admitting that I took notes when the Grand Duchess Regent of the Lyceum, Princess Jaenelle Velenosa, hosted the previous Assembly. Dame Eleanor Allenatore, who has hosted such herself, was also there for any guidance if I needed. One might think that those trained in the art of diplomacy might have nerves of ice - as cool as early spring in Farhaven. To stand before all the Houses of the Compact, however, is a different feeling than standing before the Houses of the Northlands.

I made mistakes, and allowed myself to get flustered on occasion, but it is an experience I will not forget. I learned a great deal, and am grateful for the counsel and patience of my fellow leaders of the Compact, as well as everyone who attended. We may not all always agree, or think one path is better than another. Yet we discuss the options, offer our opinions, and come to agreements despite that. It is, perhaps, what truly makes the Compact so great. And I am grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of it.

It’s hard to believe Giacomo is already one year old. Seeing him with his cousins genuinely hurt my heart. I know few would probably understand that sentiment, but I know Jules will.

I hope they grow up close; that they rely on each other and become each other’s confidants. I hope, too, we can give Giacomo a sibling to rely on.

I have hope Giacomo will grow up knowing both parts of his heritage – that of Setarco as well as Sanctum. Adrienne and I chose his First Liars, one from each family, for that very reason. I do believe that unity between the Great Houses is needed to keep us strong, and I hope that in his time, he won’t face the petty struggles over old events that stop us coming together except when war forces it upon us.

And I hope, too, war will stop forcing itself upon us.

There’s something to be said about knighthood being granted to a person who has done exemplary service, shown steadfast loyalty and dedicated to serve on the battlefield. It’s earned through extraordinary ability shown in action which honor and glory are attained. When a noble selects you amongst your peers to be elevated. One shouldn’t ask to be knighted, it’s an honour that must come willingly from others. The bond between knight and their liege should be unbreakable and the knight’s honour unyielding and unbending.

Likewise with peerage, a house shouldn’t be petitioning themselves. Their overlord and highlord ought to be the ones championing the elevation on their societal strength for reasons that they’re willing to stand and fight for. If your overlord and highlord aren’t there pushing, you should then continue serving in honour and humility to bring credit and power to your house and your overlord’s. It isn't my place to try persuading my overlord or highlord for further honours and elevation, they are the font to which I drink from. The cup doesn't say to the well "fill me with more", the well is the one which will dictate if a greater vessel can be used.

Relationship Note on Rosalind

I don't like writing these, but I feel like a great wrong has been done, and this is the only way I know to even try to put it right.

Lady Rosalind Ravenseye was with me in Bastion when it was attacked. I asked for a volunteer for a course of action that was almost certain suicide, but that would buy a lot of people the chance to get away, and she didn't hesitate. The people who were with us at the harbor can corroborate this. She was ready and willing to buy the lives of strangers with her own.

House Ravenseye bears no responsibility for the attack on Bastion, any more than House Kennex bears responsibility for Ivan Helianthus' heresy. I'm disappointed that this is even something that needs to be said.

We must always leave open a path to redemption where we can - a path back, even for those where that path would be a hard one to take, or one that might end them. Yes, we must respect the choices of all, even to be our enemy or to differ from the path of the Faith, but we always keep a hand.

The schismatic Seraph of Fireside, he who preached a heresy in the Northlands around the time of the Great Road, even sought that path - even as his allies in evil cast him down for it.

Some will say 'Ah the Carnifex is weak, the Carnifex is being /pragmatic/'. They are wrong. The Carnifex is taking his teachings from the lessons chosen by the Orthodoxy of old. People look at the silent reflections, and they cannot see beyond the punishment. The heavy price a Carnifex long before me laid on those who would deserve it. And yet. It was a punishment that allowed redemption in service. Allowed purpose to return to them. Even the legends of Dame Sugan speak of her trying to convince those who had shunned the true path, and in their refusal to choose redemption did she know their falsehoods and their evil.
