Relationship Note on Domonico

Now that the shock of your sudden passing has subsided, the pain arrests. It's not the concussive blow of impact that cripples, but the dull, restless ache that festers on and on. I have lived through many a loss, but none so unexpected in every way as yours. Was my letter delivered in time? Did the promise of a visit lift your spirits before the end? I may never know, but I choose to believe.

I regret the ill timing of my return to Arx for many reasons, but none haunt me so bitterly as losing the chance to say good-bye, my friend. I'll miss you. We'll meet again.

I had an interesting conversation with a peculiar woman. A tale of old things, thievery, and adventure. I am unsure whether I am glad to be a part of this new adventure or not. Our family has had enough heartbreak in it's time.

I am devastated by the news of what had happened in Bastion. It was more than I could truly absorb in so short a time, so many monstrous acts done in a single evening. I didn't quite know how to process it.

Yet I gained comfort in something in all of that turmoil. Not only that the warriors of the Compact have the selfless resolve that truly embodies all that Gloria and Gild treasure, not only that those less martial are not lacking in courage and retain the skills and faith needed to keep the peace among the restless and not only that we will remain determined in the face of dissent.

The Cathedral seemed to keep out some of the threats. It's telling that our enemies requested that the ground be desecrated. Perhaps to strip away our faith in the gods or to sow simple discord. Yet the faithful held true to their beliefs and did not allow such heretical requests to take root in their mind. I hope we keep in mind that the gods watch over us all and we are rewarded for keeping our faith.

The attack of the Whisper House and the fall of the great city of Bastian has my head reeling. Grayson is one of the most powerful Houses in all the realm and to see this befall them is beyond my wildest imagining.

My heart aches for the loss of so many people and families. It become clearer that these devastating attacks are meant as a message for us all. But rather than falter, I find that my determination to see as many people safe through this is firm and as resolved as ever.

And so, with this, I have written to my fellow Velenosan ministers to seek their talents, experience and fine leadership to help the houses of Lycene in to further fortify and prepare our holdings and people should we fall under the eye of this dangerous foe.

I know not how to defend against such magics, but I will not and cannot stand by and not at least try to use what tools we may have to protect every woman, child and man under our wing and to do our part to defend our realm.

I trust in my House and the houses that stand with us. I trust in our people. All those who lead, care for and protect our people, whether they be noble, common or of the Faith. All of them.

I know we will not stand idly by. That, together, we will find our way through this.

I am just happy for another winter day in Arx. The snow is falling, the cold wind is blowing, and you don't have to wipe the sweat off your brow every five minutes.

It was a week which started somewhat in struggle but ended much better. I admit I've been hiding from the weather, and from other things. I didn't go to the Assembly this month; I probably should have, but I wasn't in the mood to watch the contentiousness, and I knew well that anything I needed to learn would find its way to me in short order. I've heard there is a new Archlector of Petrichor appointed, and though I am less familiar with Petrichor's domain than others, look forward to seeing what influence he has on the city. As to the rest of it, I suspect anyone who attended either recent session of the Salon probably knows my position and I will not belabor myself in repeating it here.

I met someone very interesting indeed during one of my (admittedly many) trips to the shrines. A refreshing new face. And an interesting conversation between himself, Duke Cristoph, and me. One of the things I enjoy most is getting a look at the true devotions of the people I interact with often on a more superficial level; possibly this is self-evident considering my work. Ah, well. It was a lovely interlude, that's what I mean. I also unexpectedly ran into a relatively new but increasingly more charming friend at Duchess Isabeau's birthday party as well, and had the opportunity to introduce her to my patron - speaking of which, Lady Medeia and I have discovered we have precisely the same birthday! Can you believe it?! Astonishing. We are now planning a party which will be the talk of the city for at least a year to come.

We travel to New Hope soon for pearl diving. I hear that the weather, and the water, are somewhat warmer there. I am tolerating the winter with great panache, I believe, but I long for the smell of the Southern Sea. At least a hint of it.

I had a very fruitful meeting with Messere Raja and Captain Acacia Culler to discuss a matter that might well be of great assistance to all, mighty and less so, within this city of ours. The idea of reconstructing the road from the Compact Ward to the docks in the Lowers, and spreading the improvement to the infrastructure through the Lowers...

That we - of disparate families who do not much like each other en mass so well - can discuss these things bodes well for the Compact as a whole. As I said in the recent Assembly, we are one Compact, and united we stand against our problems. This is a thought that has great benefit for all - ease of commerce, a better life for those in the Lowers, and more safety for my own when traversing the Lowers towards the upper wards.

Not that I mean to make it sound like this is a task easily done - permission must be obtained, and resources squared to do the work. But with some additional suggestions I've made, this could be a grand thing that will serve our city and /all/ of the people within it well for decades to come.

It's difficult for me to put into words my feelings about Bastion, though I've had many days to think on them. Anger is the primary emotion, however, and the reasons for that are straightforward. The ones who attacked the city showed no regard for innocents, and used the gifts they were given to cause destruction and death. If there is any justice in the world, they will be found and put to the sword for the atrocities they committed that day.

Would that I could give a full account of my feelings, but perhaps it is best that I stop here. It angers me just to write about this much. No one who is called a knight slaughters innocents. No one.

I need to...sit down and shift my focuses. I've never felt so scattered before and I don't like it. I'm good with organization. With knowing what I'm doing. Lately it seems that I'm not that. Or I'm overloading myself again. Which is also a fairly large possibility.....

I ran the gauntlet a few days ago. It wasn't the best I've done by any means, but it was definitely fun. Drake beat everyone by, well--I don't know where all that came from, but I suppose it's time to have my husband give me some lessons.

A cracked vase has a story, a torn page is a mystery. I enjoy reading what is written between the lines. That's where the interesting bits can be found.

(most of the page is a mess of ink smears, drops and blotches, with words lost underneath.)

It's nice to see and hear some people's understanding. It makes what you're doing worth it. Which is---just trying to show that differences aren't all that bad. If you want to unite people, act united. Pointing fingers aren't going to help anyone. Causing divide is what is happening, not uniting.

I had a great time fighting in Sir Porters tournament for charity, with Sir Bhandn and I in one team, against Harlequin Tanith and Dame Bree in the other. We fought a long and hard battle, with the winner standing proud - Harlequin Tanith, with Dame Bree. It was, to say it frankly, the most fun I've had in ages.

Maybe I need to look into ways of having fun that does not involve my ass getting beat up? Either or, well done, good fun, a for a good cause. Sir Porter was an excellent host.

Fought in a charity tournament and paid for the pleasure ... only to be given a prize. How. Awkward. I don't know what to do with this! Make pillows? A quilt?

Oh, say, that's not a bad idea but-

I'll ask my mother. She's the tailor.

Either way, it was fun! And then my arm kept moving after the last opponent fell and I whapped my partner. Thankfully, Bree Harthall is a kind, decent, forgiving woman and did not throw me across the training center.

An exciting day!

This is the way of worldliness.

One cannot expect to understand the truth of a stone without turning it over. Enlightenment is in a higher place than righteousness; in the face of death, things like righteousness are rather shallow. The way to understand this is found only in consultation with others. It is said: "She who sees from the side has eight eyes." Likewise: "Thought by thought we see our own mistakes." But questioning from a selfish perspective yields no new answers. To attain these answers, travel through the land and observe what the Gods have given us.

Go to distant countries; go to some place where one is unknown. Bring with you knowledge so that you may bring the same home; it is dishonorable not to trade in like-kind that which one seeks. A rolling stone gathers no moss; a wanderer appreciates all hospitality; and hospitality is the slayer of prejudice and narrow-mindedness. For as much as the Queen has given you time, so it is not to be wasted by standing in one space and seeing one face of a stone. It therefore must be, in embracing death, that one set upon the road from time to time to contemplate one’s truths.

This is the sixth part.

Met with Raja and Prince Patrizio last night to talk of the planning for a new road. It was good to see Sweet Sam there as well and a brief but welcome appearance by Goodman Zakhar.

Obviously, there's much to be done and many folk to speak and consult with, support to build, and people to bring on board, but it seems to be all coming together.

It will be a good thing for all in the end. Certainly for the Lowers and those that trade and sail. It's rather a welcome thing to see a project weigh anchor that will benefit both nobles and common folk.

So with more meetings planned, starting with the Commoner Council, and missives to send to various ministers of the realm and to those who good souls who offered to help at the onset of all this, that being the Crown Minister of Civil Development, Marquessa Samantha Deepwood, Crown Minister of Coin and Leader of the Silver Consortium, Rook Champagne and Lady Mabelle Laurent, we begin charting a new course to a better Arx.

Here's to building new roads and stronger bridges between us.

A week since Bastion and... I'm still having trouble being indoors. The confines of a place remind me too much of the flight through the tunnels beneath the city, and it just is too hard to get out of my mind. The press of people and the mad rush to be free of the horrors we saw there.

If only this could've happened during summer. At least when the snow gets too intense, I can disappear into the shed - Bessie and Astra don't seem to mind.

Drake did an outstanding job at the gauntlent. Raven Corban and Bhandn did an admirable job too. Archlector Mathis seemed to struggle but i give him immense credit for attempting something I have not.
