Relationship Note on Edain

I was recently informed that Prince Edain was bemoaning about the suggestive names of Thraxian games while simultaneously declaring he was getting a group together for a vigorous cornholing. I nearly laughed my servant right out of the room, thinking that my good friend has finally declared his secret hedonism to the world (I, of course, have known all along), only to be informed that 'cornhole' is actually a game where you throw bags of corn into a hole. That sounds utterly boring, and utterly Valardin.

Of course, I am personally glad that Redrain keeps it real and doesn't do anything remotely as suggestive as the Valardin and Thrax apparently do. Now, please do excuse me while I get oiled up for another rousing round of bear wrestling.

It is the eve of the fifth day of the eighth month. Not much new has been going on, but I have learned a bit more about Arx. It is amazing, that there is so much to learn. I'm hoping that the wall is repaired, with all the recent news about things out and about it's best we don't have to place so many people in the way of whatever is there. I've supported it as best I'm able, but this task is better suited for someone who has enough resources to truly assist with the rebuilding. I would ask that any which read this, put their assistance towards the wall being rebuilt, if they aren't currently supporting any other endeavors.

Relationship Note on Victus

When catching up on new journal entries I stumbled across one written by High Lord Victus where he lamented missing out on a noodling competition. I found this to be not only a silly name but one that might also have a tawdry meaning, so curiosity got the better of me and I had to find out what "noodling" was.

Well I had to ask just about every scribe working but I eventually found one the directed me to a very informative book. It turns out that 'noodling' is a method of catching fish that involves diving under the water, sticking your hand down the fishes burrow so it tries to swallow your arm whole, and then pulling them up out of the water. This sounds to me a both crazy and dangerous way to catch a fish!

I am certainly glad that in the Oathlands we don't have any such pass times with silly and suggestive names. In fact I am going to go back to the Manor and round up everyone for a nice vigorous game of cornhole!

Once upon a time, a long - long - long time ago,

When rats ran after cats,
and dogs were chased by cats

there lived an Old Man and an Old Woman. That this couple had two children living with them, foundling twins, and the Old Woman couldn't stand the sight of them. The boy was named Kato and the girl Linnea. (Yes, my girl, like Uncle Kato.) There would often be times that they would go hungry, and if the Old Woman was in a mood she would throw shoes at them - (How cruel! Such smelly shoes.) Oh, those poor children. What a life that they knew.

So, one day, the Old Woman (who was known to have a shriveled old prune for a heart in at least seven neighboring villages) as wicked as she was cunning, told the Old Man that she had no wish to take care of these ungrateful orphans any longer. She demanded he take them into the deeps of the woods and do whatever the Gods inspired him to do. Leave them, kill them - as long as she never saw them again.

The Old Man, weak with age and illness and love, made up his mind to do her bidding and so he took the twins - Kato and Linnea - into the woods on his morning of hunting game and gathering wood for the cook fire. The children went joyfully, as children are want to do when chores are a game for them. The Old Man took them through glades, over hills, and as far (as faaaaar) as he could take them until his old joints started to creak and his old bones cracked. He knew for certain that they would never be able to find their way home if not for him.

But, with worry in his heart, he broke a roll in half and gave each of the children their bread for their lunch. He tasked them to collect dry kindling as he went off to track game on a trail. He asked them to be quiet and to stay in the clearing until he returned.

The Old Man left. He did not return.

When the sun in the sky dipped down low enough, Linnea shared her half of roll with her brother for lunch. They waited. When the sun touched the horizon, Kato shared his half of roll with his sister for supper. Still they waited. They waited until dark. They waited so long that they started to weep. They sobbed so bitterly that even a stone's heart would melt to hear it. They wept until the twins both ran out of tears. So, alone and thirsty (but with full bellies) they finally left the clearing. Not to search for the Old Man, but to find water to slake their thirst.

They came to a pond where the water was still. The only tracks left were those of a fox leading up to the water. In stories as these, one must always be careful of such places.

Kato knelt to drink, and Linnea stopped him. "Do not drink, brother, or the old Gods (or the Elves, or whatever old and unknown power my dear Mother would use to frighten us, little one - this cradle stories are filled with wonders and fears) will turn you into a fox and there'll be no one to look after me." Kato, who loved his sister, took heed and the pair walked on.

A few steps farther they came upon a rippling stream. The only tracks left were those of a bear.

This time, Linnea knelt to drink and Kato stopped her. "Do not drink, sister, or the old Gods will turn you into a bear and there'll be no one to look after me." Linnea, who loved her brother, took heed and the pair walked on.

When they approached a river that had only deer tracks leading to the water. Linnea again warned Kato. So, they walked on.

They walked until they reached a brackish marsh, where the fresh water met the salt. Neither of the twins knew to avoid saltwater. They glanced around and saw that there were no tracks that they could see. So, with relief in both of their hearts they dropped to their knees and drank their fill of brackish water. In that moment - the birds stopped chirping, the wind stopped blowing, even the stars that were starting to waken stopped their twinkling for a moment.

Where the twins knelt in the mud were now two serpents: one dazzled golden-silver, one sparkling jewel tones.

(Enough of that, for now. Hugs and kisses, Arvum.)

The pool party went very well. I'm not sure how much silver was raised for the orphans or refugees, I forget which it was, but I've a suspicion that it was quite a bit in the end. I contributed six thousand of my own silver to the cause, and won myself a wonderful piece of artwork done during the boat battle. I shall now have the moment in time when Prince Abbas Thrax knocked Marquis Ford Kennex into the pool forever displayed on the wall in my room.

Forever.

I was able to meet several new people at the gathering as well, and I'm looking forward to further encounters with them.

Relationship Note on Selene

She had me undress her at a pool party. That's not something one easily forgets. Nor all my relatives yelling about how they'd run and tell my wife. Of course, I don't think she meant anything beyond harmles fun, and the woman was as charming as her position dictates.

It's been a long month. And shit, I've gone through so much whiskey... I can't even begin to count the bottles... But I am still here, regardless of everything. Here, tonight, I think of oranges and promises of sharks on my doorstep, and of rose petals upon the tongue, and it makes me want to open yet another bottle.

Good news is, been meeting some new people... hopefully it will open new opportunities and teamwork. I suppose there are plus sides to not being a full time hermit...

it has been both a wonderful, and a difficult week.

I have tried to soar free since arriving here in Arx. Tried to be like the butterfly and spread my wings. I have felt that, since I have been here; a sense of freedom unlike that which I have felt before.

Something happened this week that reminded me of the weight of chains, of how it feels to be insignificant and unwanted.

Yet, something else happened to lift me higher and smile brighter, that made me feel wanted, but also needed. And now, I know, I am forever out of the reach of chains.

Relationship Note on Deva

I'm not very good at writing public journals, for I tend to keep most of my thoughts to myself unless I see reason to share it. But I have to say something about you. For some time now, you've been at my side, and even when you don't realize it, even when you worry, you have been my pillar of strength. You have been a partner, someone I can talk to and will listen to me. Someone that is not afraid to tell me when I could be wrong, and someone that is not shy from supporting me when I'm right.

It is impossible not to care about you, the way I've grown to care about you. It is impossible not to watch your fire, without wanting to help it burn brighter. It is impossible not to feel alive when you're at my side.

Thank you.

Determined as fiercely on the defensive as at the attack. As ever I look to the character of the forces by your side, and then across your field to those arrayed against you. Their call to battle ringing false. Their pennants limp and flaccid.

Whosoever stands against you- time will forget.
