We decided to eng it. While we were good together... great even. It was easy to see our goals were not the same and we could not reconcile it. It was a queer position to put her in... and myself. I hope she dosn't hate me. I hope I can pick up the piece of my heart. I'm 26, my brothers, sisters, and cousins are all with children and spouces. I have yet to produce a heir in order to continue my family name... or produce more retainers for the Lyonesse who consider me family as it is. Time will tell. At least the Marquessa is there to pick me up when I fall. She always is.

Relationship Note on Mae

A bundle of energy, this messenger seems to take her job quite seriously. If she's trustworthy enough, then most certainly I'll be using her for some correspondence. And some other things I have in mind - she is eager for work and pleasant to talk to and seemingly smart as a whip. So we'll see what comes. I'm interested.

Relationship Note on Fiachra

After reading all of the proclamations earlier today, I feel as if I owe you an apology. I didn't even think of getting you a Diamondplate bow as a pre-cursor to even seeing each other.

I'm obviously very bad at this courting thing.

You never can use the fruit of the vine as an excuse, though it might make you do silly things.

Or it just makes you tell the truth.

I can't tell which is which, but I better start sharpening up that sword.

Relationship Note on Niccolo

Throughout the duration that I've known the man he has proven himself to be prudent and attentive to the undercurrents of life. While neither of us would likely call the other a friend, purely due to the lack of frequent encounters, we seem to possess a basic respect and understanding of one another. I do believe he will lead his people well and they will thrive as a result.

Sometimes people take my advice and sometimes that makes them sane.

Relationship Note on Lark

Princess Lark and I have not had chance to interact as much as we should. Truth be told, most of the times we have me has been due to sets of unfortunate circumstances. Yet, every time I've been impressed by her grace and her pragmatism in what most likely would have shaken most others. Most others, but not her. I don't think I've seen this woman ever shaken and perhaps the closest moment was one of compassion for a friend, that I happened to witness from the outside in. I suspect this pragmatism of hers will serve her very well in the difficult times that await all of us.

Oh man! Somebody told me they found someone talking shit about me in a white journal, which is always the BEST. I had to go dig around to find it, but once I did it was like an early birthday present. Or a late one. I think late, because it's not the new year yet. So yeah. Late present! It was delightful. I loved it. I'll treasure it always.

Relationship Note on Jasher

WHY!? The single word which defines my thoughts on this prince of Thrax, he isn't at all like his fellows which is a good thing and a bad thing. Perhaps it might be due to that churlish knight who seems to be at his hip, infecting him with a negative spirit? Perhaps with the right encouragement with other Thraxan royals, we might see Prince Jasher rise up to the occasion. Maybe he'll drop that annoying knight. One has hope! Not much, but you have to start somewhere.

Relationship Note on Aleksei

The man has possibility, but it seems he's still a whiny child suckling the teat of his paramour. He seems to have a very strange idea as to what Thraxans are like, and far too sensitive to maintain a discussion about anything which might trigger those sensitivities. I don't like him, I've decided. Landcrabs must be handing out knighthoods to any Tom, Dick or Aleksei.

Relationship Note on Sina

I met the other day a most remarkable young woman named Sina Izetta, learning that she's the trusted hand servant to Princess Donella who happens to be the Voice of Thrax. Quiet and reserved, one might mistake her for one's shadow although the two of us talked at some length. The cliffside gazebo with its masterful watch over the bay of Thrax opened our conversation. It didn't pass me that her eyes are like moonshine, the opposite of mine. I'll have to make a special wine...

Relationship Note on Niccolo

The man is the embodiment of intelligent nobility. He has tirelessly expressed extreme grace and humility while navigating powerful losses to his person, his House, his fealty... unerring dignity whilst having his character brought into question time and time again... and in having received what can only be viewed from the outside as a partial justice if that. I can see why a lesser woman, already made vulnerable through her deficiency of personal virtues as a result of a lifetime of extreme privilege, could become hopelessly enamored and infatuated. I have only compassion for such a creature where were I him, I might well be within my rights to not.

It's official now.

Last night I went and offered Darren my fealty as duchess. He accepted, of course. So now Stonedeep has it's fourth duke or duchess in as many years.

I fear I may have inherited a curse. Gods protect me.

We held the Vulture's Feast for the dead in the Phoenix brigade the other day. For those of you who aren't familiar with such a thing, when my lads and lassies lose someone, we hold a little ritual...

The dead's possessions are put in a pile. We send them to the Thirteenth with no shoes and in as ratty a uniform as can be found. While this sounds gruesome I want to remind you fucks that these men and women devoted their lives to their brothers and sisters of battle and understand fully how important a good pair of boots and a jerkin without holes is. Those who express wishes otherwise are honored, but for us - keeping the clothing of the dead keeps their memory with us.

That little greenish stain on the white linen shirt - remember the time we had that mush and he laughed so hard he coughed it up and it spilled? That sewn-up line there - that shav nearly gutted her and she turned around and took it's head clean off. Those boots - remember when he lost at dice and those boots and his hat were all he was allowed to wear that night per the wager? That dagger - she won it in that knife-throwing contest off that merchant- who later admitted he didn't expect a woman to throw so good.

A good pair of boots can win a war. Ask any general or quartermaster. The smallest things can mean the difference between soldiers with good dry feet and those with blackrot. An extra dagger can be the death of an enemy when your sword is knocked from your hand.

So we tell tales of them - the more ribald and embarrassing the better. We eat their favorite foods if we can come by them. We send their most personal momentos to their kin and we keep the rest and divvy it up according to need. We honor their memories and keep them alive in our hearts by carrying part of them with us. Like a vulture - taking death and making life out of it.

They don't call me the Old Buzzard for nothing.

We invoke Lagoma and the Thirteenth in our prayers - she is the patron of our unit after all. Her fires purify and destroy, heal and harm. That is why the Phoenix is our sygil and our unit badge. The firebird never dies; she is reborn and renewed. Our medics may die but they always live on with us in their small way. Even though they have moved beyond this reflection they will stay here in our memories.
