Relationship Note on Deva

A sketch. A young, green-brown snake is coiled on top of an old trunk, its long ago-demise clearly natural. Trees come, trees fall. Sometimes, their falls are gentle. The snake's mouth is open, its teeth nearly transparent, but the impression is entirely that of grinning enthusiasm. The sky behind it is fire-bright.

Relationship Note on Tristan

I will say this much on the behalf of the Royal Stable Master. He is dedicated to his work and takes it as an affront when he perceives anyone assuming his duties. It is admirable and I can only hope that many more sworn to His Majesty will showcase such commitment.

Mad times call for sharp axes. We are not bending the knee to our enemies. We are only getting stronger to slay them.

I probably have no cause to write this, but it's something I've been thinking of, and maybe I ought to put it to paper.

If you ask me, maybe when they find whoever it was that killed Prince Donrai, they'll know something about what's happened to the Grand Duchess Esera too, or the other way around. And I'd start keeping better watch on the other High Lords and Ladies, if I was captain of their guards, just in case. Or maybe it's the Dominus that ends up poisoned, next thing you know.

Not that I know much of politics and treachery of this sort, and I'm not saying coincidences don't happen. But it sure is a good trick for the enemy, when they're right at the doorstep. Maybe they expected folk would start fighting over it, and that's not happened yet. They did in the Thrax ward, from what I hear, but that's just their way, and it looks like they're done with that for now.

Relationship Note on Eleyna

I'm almost certain she wants me dead after the family dinner but, to her credit, she did pretty well. The wine likely helped.

Nobody appreciates the Artiglio sense of humour, it's true. We're a rare species.

We're, however, probably better off that way. People can barely handle Blacktongue and I in the same room.

Loss. It can take on many forms. Some loss is temporary, a fleeting thing. Some is far more permanent. All will leave it's mark upon the heart and mind, and hold a place in history.

This week, we have lost much. The Grand Duchess, my dear friend, has gone missing. I believe in my heart that her absence will only be temporary, if only because of how much love she has left behind. I would do anything to ensure she is returned safe and sound - we are bonded by will, after all, and move forward together in friendship.

And then there was the loss of the Stone's Grove. This sacred and solemn space, which once held so much history and promise, gone in an instant. I do not lay blame upon anyone for what happened there, and only seek to move forward and see it brought back to life once more. I think this loss will be temporary too, and hold hope that I'll one day again be able to take my morning stroll out onto the lush greens.

I just received a shipment, crates, from my sister Ianthe. And a few letters, things to forward along.

I'm scared.

And I'm also laughing.

Is this... is this sand, at the bottom of the crate?

One of the crates had holes. There was a kitten squeaking in it. It's very chubby and has white toes. It's currently sitting on Mongoose's head.

These look like pressed flowers. I'm actually wondering if they aren't gizzards of some animals. They might be. They're quite colorful.

...that's a book on erotica. Oh. Oh my.

Lots of clothes. Black leather. Lots of black leather.

So many other books.

Oh, Ianthe.

Could you not fold these before sending them?

Or washed them?

Come back safe, so I can scold you for this. And love you.

Relationship Note on Calypso

Lady Calypso Malvici is a skilled and competent general from the Lyceum. Skilled in leading troops and also skilled with a blade herself, I've sparred with her on a few occasions and it has been a delight. She's been recently appointed the Minister of Defense and so I look forward to seeing what she can do for the Compact.

Relationship Note on Victus

While I can't say I ever expected Lord Victus Thrax to ascend to the seat of High Lord of Thrax, I can't say I'm surprised. What I know of the man is that he's a vicious fighter with a keen mind. I've had nothing but pleasant interactions with the man, even when we're beating the shit out of one another in the field.

I have no doubt he'll do House Thrax proud as their new High Lord. And I'll do what I can to support him along the way.

Sleep is often hard to find, especially these days. And so I walk often alone at night with my thoughts.

Over the past few days I have sensed a stirring. I do not know if this means things will get better or worse, but I do sense that things are on the cusp of great change, for good or ill.

I can only hope that as settle, if they ever settle, I will see things more clearer. And perhaps, with luck, others will too.

Relationship Note on Tristram

Got to have lunch with cousin Tristram. He's quite the archer - he let me borrow his bow which was exquisitely made and so finely balanced I could have hung it atop a fingertip. He seemed to know everyone and anyone as we were lunching at the practice grounds - definitely someone I need to get to know more, if I want to meet more nobles and non-nobles in the city.

Relationship Note on Ansel

Cousin Ansel definitely has a great deal on his shoulders. He seems fair, however, and balanced, and definitely has a tight relationship with his sisters. He is handling the weight of responsibility on his shoulders pretty well, I think.

This week was intense. The General got into some sort of alteraction with the family and that led to some wrung hands. But we're focused on our new assignment now, and it looks like we'll be able to get the boys into the field and get to proving why we're around.

Relationship Note on Julea

That weapon she made was like nothing I have ever seen made by a modern hand. Diamondplate is notoriously difficult to make, let alone turn into a perfect instrument of death. It surpasses most of the heirloom weapons I've seen in the hands of Ducal Houses, weapons a centuries old and which carry the honor of a whole House.

I don't know her, or most of anything about her, but I know that someone who can do that has rare fucking gift.

One I am inclined to respect.

Relationship Note on Margot

So far have we come since being wards under Donrai Thrax's cold, watchful gaze.

So much punishment have we endured. Our families decimated and our lives subsumed for others' purposes.

And now, she takes the reins of Tyde.

I have only my lament.

But my regret is a deep, deep thing, and as filled with resolve as the Lament is filled with ranks upon ranks of marines. The Reaper sits in the harbor, a harbinger of things to come.

Dark horizons, and dark tides. - Let them bring what they will.

Unexpected, but the rule of strength has spoken.
