There is a history to Arx that we have lost, and now we have lost a life to trying to rediscover it. Horatio Mercier was an inquisitive soul, and we are all made sad for his loss. I did not know him well, but I recognized the insatiable curiosity he had as something akin to my own.

Relationship Note on Neve

Always a breath of fresh air, Neve's presence is like having the Greenwood brought with us to Arx. It helps to lessen the longing for home. I sincerely hope that the city is made the better for her presence in it; she is a shining light.

I only had the pleasure of meeting Horatio Mercier the once. He let me hold his snake.

People always think I'm making a lewd joke when I say that, but it's the literal truth. He had a great white snake, named Lady Meandre, and I got to bond with her and wrap her around me, and he told me I was spoiled and silly.

I liked him.

I hope our meeting was a fond memory for him.

I hope he is at peace.

And thus a night of conversation and whiskey ends with a bitter note that not even the sweetest of wines could cure. I am so sorry. Life is never fair. I wish there was something I could say, something I could do, but all there is, is silence.

It has become a bittersweet season.

I woke up to missives waiting for me at the bar of the Unkindness, three. The first one was about business. The second one was sympathy, which I did not understand. The third was from the Merciers. I read it once, then again, and I have read this single piece of paper more times than I have ever read anything in my entire life. Each word has been memorized, each indent of the writing's instrument, each stop and start as if the writer did not know what he wished to say next, or how he was going to soften the blow of the next word to come. I am not sure when I started crying, I did not feel the tears begin to fall, only see them drop on that damned page. I have never wished to preserve and destroy something so badly at the same time then this damned page.

This was not how this was meant to be, Horatio, not how the play was scripted. You have left me to awkwardly stand on the sidelines alone. It seems like even you lie.

I love you.

The dog thing did not work out but an old contact of mine from Maelstorm came to me with an idea. He just wants me to fund it. I agreed after he showed me what they can do. This hogs float and swim, they gore anything in their path. They can be trained and some times even better than dogs. They also eat anything you put out for them. That is great for a ship. Pack it with a gang of about four hogs and you are set. If shit hit the fan, you can eat them too.

Someone else died today. I did not know him well, in that I had just met him a few hours prior to his death. But he was foolhardy and fearless. And by fearless, I do not mean particularly brave but rather that he just.. perhaps didn't see potential risk? Or maybe, to him, the rewards far outweighed it.

But he was not a noble, and I do not know if that half the city will be weeping and in sorrow for the loss of this one young alchemist. I think, if he had of lived, that we might of maybe become friends. He seemed like someone I would get along with.

I didn't know you as well as some others did Horatio, but I am still saddened by your loss. I think I'll always carry a part of you, with me.

And I am not sure I will be able to sleep quite so easily tonight, or for quite some time after it.

All stories are made up of different strings. It is these strings that weave the tapestry of truth or lies. The more artful the storyteller the tighter the weave.

There once was a knight from Farhaven
That no one would dare say was craven
But from his ax head
All the maidens fled
Cause he looked like a bear that was shaven

Sunrise, so crimson and copper,
Streaks its warming way across the indigo sky,
Turning nights wealth to pauper,
The city longs for the suns first kiss to draw nigh.

Relationship Note on Cara

I only know Lady Cara in passing. From our one meeting I'm glad she's a Voice. She'll do well. And she understands, I think, my need to stay out of politics. Also: She's terrifying.

Already I feel limited by being away from the capital. In Arx, I could easily access fellow traders among other noble houses. Walk the streets and you could meet representatives within the hour. Or even higher nobles willing to indulge in trade agreements. Here... Well, I spend my time overseeing the production of whiskey and precious metals, when I'm not hunting down the debtors. Still, I miss the capital.

Meditation on the Reflection, a prayer.

Embrace thy passions
The Darkness to the Light
Be blinded by Neither.

See, and Embrace thy Strength,
Whole and complete
Claiming thy Power in Truth.

Act, use thy Strength to thrive,
To make thy people victorious,
Breaking the chains that bind them to fear.

In the Reflection, be Unbroken, Undiminished.

And so I am away to Gemecitta once more, all packed up and shipped away like a crate of oranges. It is a strange feeling, to know that I am leaving Arx, which has in its way become more my home than the south.

For all of the pull of the olive groves and the heat of a Lycene summer, I shall look forward to returning, should the gods bless our travel and permit us to do so. It shall hopefully not be a long trip, and I look forward to recounting my journey home once I am returned.

(Please, city, do not burn down while I am away. I did not pack enough of my books with me.)

Relationship Note on Belladonna

I don't care for parties.

But they are better when you have a friend to keep you company, and make sure you are not required to speak too often.
