I am not known for my knowledge. I prefer hosting grand balls or adventurous, sometimes dangerous, events. This was something that I thought might be fun and was pleased when Nadia agreed to assist me in hosting.

There were ultimately two teams of participants. Prince Darren, Lady Lydia, and Lord Tobias. The other team was Lord Valkieri, Lady Aislin, and Sir Silas. I am not quite sure what Prince Darren's idea of victory is, but he did not receive one last night. There were a total of six questions, three by me and three from Duchess Nadia. Lady Aislin's team answered the first, third, and fourth, and a half point to the sixth question. Prince Darren's team answered the second and a half point for the third question. I was drinking, as were we all, but I can count quite proficiently.

For the record, Lord Valkieri, I believe the event went well and I would not consider it a 'disaster' at all. You have just become my new project. I fear that you were never taught how to behave with any sort of etiquette or polite decorum, and instead of being upset or angry at your remarks, you are now mine.

Some of my fondest memories of home are contests like this. There'd be a large bonfire, scantily clad women in furs and leathers, and we'd drink for every question that was answered wrong. Of course, every question answered correctly was also drank to, but that was part of the fun. Eventually, one of us would get so pissed that we'd slug the quizmaster, and a brawl would break out, but that was /also/ part of the fun.

There was no brawl to finish out Duchess Nadia and Princess Jaenelle's quiz, nor was there a bonfire or scantily clad women. But there was plenty of drink to be had, and thus there I was. I single handedly held up my team and brought us to victory, of course, even if the Princess claimed we were "all" winners. What a crock of shit, that.

Relationship Note on Abbas

I hope Mangata is pleased with herself, because I have come across several noteworthy men recently that feel more at home in her realm than upon land. This particular entry is dedicated to a one Abbas Thrax, Lion of the Seas. You can surely see why I am partial, but animal allusions and animalistic tendencies aside, I genuinely like the man, and look forward to getting to know him better.

Perhaps what pleases me most is his talent for conversation. Okay, maybe I am not being entirely forthright, allow me to explain: One cousin is the perfect listener, while Abbas is marvelous to engage in deep, often more thoughtful discord. Between the pair of them, I have the best of both worlds.

What? Oh, well of course he's good looking as well. I don't care a whit about ugly people.

Though I do wonder how he wound up with those grey streaks within his hair...

A sea Captain whom I gather is a merchantman dealing in trade. His latest interest is in fine wines. He seems a likeable, jovial fellow.

A fencing foil is less than a third of the weight of either of the swords I wield now, and I have not used one since I was a small boy. It will be very easy to put more force than is needed behind the foil for the memory in my muscles of a heavier weapon, and miss the mark of my parries, or overestimate the momentum and root my weight too heavily. There is not long to practice and remind my body how to use a foil, but I am looking forward to Sir Silas' competition just the same.

There a couple of spars on the horizon as well, when time allows, that I am looking forward to. I have a new blade, expertly crafted by Mistress Ida, that I have yet to use that desperately requires a first blooding. That the sword was a gift, it seems suiting that its initiation come from friendly competition rather than hostile violence. Perhaps it will find a proper name in the process. All good swords should have a name, and I have never owned the like of Mistress Ida's craftsmanship.

Lady Kima sent me several southern-inspired designs today. I have to say, I didn't expect to be so taken by them, but they are just so -different-....

I'm sharing the designs with several of my fellow guildmembers. If I'm so easily inspired by them, perhaps they are too?

I hired Master Anastasio for a simple task; to brew a hair treatment oil that could withstand the harshness of the sea and summer sun. He did not disappoint. What was delivered to me is an exquisite blend of adventure at sea, the spirit of a dangerous corsair, and the allure that all entitles. All captured in a little bottle to be sold to the masses. Not all of us are given the freedom to take to a ship and leave behind our responsibilities but with this hair fragrance, I can see even the simplest of men taking the disguise of corsairs and privateers. Perhaps enhancing their confidence in the company of womenfolk and I am sure the ladies will be forever thankful that their men both look good and smell good. It is a win/win and I am excited for what the future business with Master Anastasio holds.

Relationship Note on Darren

I'm happy to say that since I arrived to Arx, I seem to have a growing friendship with Prince Darren.
We're taken to meeting up at the Spirits, where he says I help to add some levity to his day. Still, for all he claims that he values my friendship, there are still secrets he doesn't share. Silly secrets that don't need to be secret at all. It would probably help him if it wasn't a secret, but I suppose it's his life!

PS I need to remember to check in about the leathers.

I finally took the time to shop by Mistress Joscelin's shop and have a chat with her. I didn't really go into it with any expectations, only curiosity, and I feel confident in her ability to guide the Crafter's Guild should she be given the position. She is close to Mistress Ida and Mistress Acacia, too, which further adds to her good tastes. I promised to craft her a set of rocking chairs in exchange for a piece of jewelry for my sister when her next birthday comes to pass.

Interest in the Fencing Competition I wish to hold has been trickling in. It is worth noting that even aspiring swordsmen have a chance to pull of a win against a veteran warrior; a saber or foil is much different than a long sword!

It was quite different meeting her out of the strangely casual context of that party on the beach. Refined and gracious as you would expect from someone in her position. A pleasant conversationalist. Lady Sylphie will be thrilled at her generous invitation to tea.

Relationship Note on Joscelin

Mistress Joscelin Arterius was always someone who I felt like I could swiftly become friends with, but she's gained my respect, as well. She wears her emotions openly, but in a manner that's rather inspiring, and she's truly passionate in the things she believes in. I wasn't entirely convinced about her potential role as Guildmaster until I sat down and spoke with her at length about it in person - but now I don't think I could endorse anyone else. She has her head on straight and there's far more ingenuity in the things she does than people might notice at first glance, all the way down to the meticulously carved buttons on her clothing. On top of that, well, she's a great partner for spectating events and drinking. There's just something genuinely warm there.

I was graciously gifted a piece of jewelry from her shop and was admittedly stunned by how perfectly chosen it was. It spoke volumes about her ability as an artisan and it certainly placed the person who granted it to me in extra high regard as a result. I've similarly used her shop for a token gift for someone else and it was remarkable what she could do. Never doubt the effect an amazing piece of jewelry might have, eh?

Relationship Note on Sylvie

Lady Sylphie struck me as being good with people the minute I originally overheard her conversation at the beach. Even distracted as I was with the game, it was hard not to catch notice of her. She's sharp in the way that lends itself to effortless conversation and I was a bit beyond pleased when my audience with Duke Niccolo in the Salon was happened upon by her. Gemecitta is one of the few city-states in the Lyceum that I haven't traveled to yet, but her descriptions leave me ever curious. I rather earnestly look forward to further engagements with her.

When I read notice of a number of beds being brought down to the Boroughs, I was mildly suspicious. Although, looking back on it now, being suspicious about beds is somewhat of an embarrassing thing to admit.

Anyhow, seeing as the order came from the owner of my favorite whiskey dive, I figured a bit of prodding here and there wouldn't hurt anything. Glancing over the evident plans, with the help of more than a couple of shared shots, brought truth to the matter, though. The Grayhope ability to play markets is always a little impressive, but it's how they managed to secure the Tavern, after all.

Sir Silas' craftsmanship is remarkable and worthy of trend, and the extra coin is all the better if it can coax him into setting up more game nights.

I never played Beachball that much in the past, though it wasn't completely foreign to me either. Inspiration works wonders though in the right situation and Lady Star (Lady Dawn) ensured our team had just that. While I'm still trying to get the sand out of my boots, Gull and Star put up a significant effort against the opposite side and their distinctly lacking nicknames.

Lord Valkieri caught onto the sport remarkably quickly and I don't know that anyone aside from Princess Valencia could make such sliding efforts as graceful. Lady Sylphie is a great commentator though, even if she won off my loss. I'm a little annoyed that Sir Silas managed to hit every single one of my spikes, but the guardsman has evident practice and if anyone is expected to save people or restore order or something--

Would I do it again? Absolutely. Especially if waterfalls are involved or other chances for wager. Maybe the crab cakes shouldn't be brought out until the end though.

It's been a while since I've worked so hard and didn't anything but get parried. He's a giant weapon in himself, and despite the bruises, I'm glad to have sparred with him. He's not instructor material, but he'll definitely be a change of pace for my men. I'm looking forward to observing.

Lady Zaffria requested a discreet reading for Lord Rubino for their mutual entertainment, or possibly for his extreme discombobulation. I'm delighted either way, personally.

The cards make her the Queen of Hearts. I almost need not write anything further. This will be enough of a reminder.

My deck says: the Empress, inverted. The only shadow on an otherwise mutually beneficial business relationship. I hope to entertain many of her noble friends.

Relationship Note on Valkieri

Lord Rubino disapproves of me.

I enjoy that.

Two of Hearts I read for him and I believe it to be true. Eerily accurate reading in all counts, actually. He left me itching with curiosity, or perhaps the niggling desire to punch him. I find it so difficult to tell those two things apart.

Ah, wealth.

Think on him now and I draw the Knave of Clubs. I don't doubt it. The man is a weapon. Does he know what to do with himself?

Flip the deck:

Knight of Swords. I doubt that not, but it does seem a little on the nose.

If his skepticism becomes the fashion, though, I'm going to need to come up with a better professional scheme.

Generous stranger, many tattoos. Why don't I have one of those? I was too hung over to take the free drink. I told him I'd buy him one. Must remember, else remember to forget.

Remember the Five of Diamonds. Not a frivolous one, he says. He tips well. I like a man who knows how to spend his silver on me.

The Chariot, Reversed. I am no stranger to the metaphysics of motion. He seems friendly and straightforward. When we meet again, I will, too, yes? Of course, yes.
