Our capital, the supposed heart of civilization in Arvum.

Plagued and polluted by vermin that some call 'pets'.

Knees were freed, and the obstacle course conquered with friends and family. It was a fun outing.

I didn't see any cows in attendance.

The Lady Whitehawk intriduced me to Lord Mirk Halfshav. I am still occasionally surprised at the broad range of people I find in Arx. An interesting and helpful man who bridges my home and past with this new leg of my life journey. Has me thinking deeply about many things both compare and contrasted between the two.

I have five papercuts as proof of my research this week. I'd rather have answers to show, but so far it's papercuts. That's the glamours part of a scholar's life they never warn you about.

I had someone ask about my family this week. It made me realize the pain of their loss has faded to a dull ache; one I forget is there until something brings it up. It's been years since the Bringers of Silence came down from the North and took them all away from me. Years since I brought my village to Arx for safety. A safety that was fleeting given the siege. But more lived here than back home, so I call it a good choice.

Regarding animals, I heard that someone managed to train a chicken to deliver a letter. That's amazing if it's true! It's the smartest chicken in all of the lands, I'd wager.

I think that's a fantastic idea. However, I don't think Princess Alis is of the same mind, so perhaps it's best if we shelve it for now. The children can pet our cows anyway. If they can catch them.

Relationship Note on Aswin

I may have to go to Aswin any time I need a trim. He practically sets a new standard. And none of the candlesticks are missing.

Back in Arx. Its been far to long. Asger's death was quite hard. So i took some time away.Years away but to be back as things start to unfold. How will my time in Arx fair this time, I quite wonder.

Last week a badger came lumbering into the Archives with a folded piece of paper in its mouth. The journal entry was very damp and hard to read.

The day before yesterday a junior scholar got very scratched up and bitten by a rat with a piece of paper. She thought it was someone's pet sent to deliver something. It was not.

I don't have to make a rule about this, do I?

(Scholars note, this was sent via missive upon a small rooster that sat outside the doors clucking at us until someone took the note.)

I don't care what other people say.
Turnips make for a good alcohol. Maybe they shouldn't be mixed with lemoncello.
Though they are excellent as a liquid.

I think my merchant neighbors might make me go missing if a cow ended up out back behind the shop. It's a bit of an accidental animal rescue already.

There are cracks on the surface, like the spine of an oft-read book. It doesn't mean that it's broken, just well loved.

I hope that it's a difference that's appreciated with time.

I lent him to my cousin Eiran and now I wonder if they are having too much fun together.

Fear is the product of ignorance.

Initially, it is not the product of wrong thinking: it is instinctual. It is found in the minds of all animals, though the ones of better faculties have learned to not succumb always to it. In humans, however, its power is increased because of our ability to recall past injuries. When we anticipate or foresee injury, the power of fear is aggravated by the mechanisms we have built around ourselves to avoid pain. And those mechanisms grow in power until they dominate our behaviors.

But we also have the ability to override instinct in favor of purpose.

Pain is a response. Injury is a fact. One can let the response override purpose, but which is higher, wise general? Which is of more importance to the realm and our legacies? When we accept that injuries happen and that we will suffer pain, and not let fear dictate our actions, then we may better pursue that which is noble. And when we accept death, the culmination of those injuries and pains, as an inevitability, so it is that we may completely conquer fear and see most clearly.

The Queen's call is but a beckoning to join another adventure.

Cedar Vale is in my blood, and my blood tells me that it's time to go home. I feel an excitement at the thought of returning after so long in the city, an uplifting of my soul that I haven't felt for quite the longest time. And it feels good.

I wonder if the bluebells will be as blue as I remember them.

Relationship Note on Lierre

This is true.

Perhaps we should encourage Kael to get one as well. Our cousin has looked troubled of late, and he could use a diversion.

And the children would love a pet, or so I am told by those I know who have children.
