The skill of Arvani healers is a marvelous thing. For as much as I rail against some flaws of the mainland, that is one quarter in which it would be utter folly to deny their expertise.

Someone should have told me how much sewing I'd be doing just for my children. This is getting ridiculous. I know I haven't done much in the shops as of late, but I'm thinking perhaps some perfumes...

I am doing more socializing. Sort of. A dinner, watching Lady Whitehawk's hawk contest, getting out a little. I have discovered I am not even as frilly as I thought I was when compared to those aroind me, which is kind of satisfying for me but has me amazed by how varied the city's nobility can be! Lord Mattheu wears countless bells to honor the wind! I am almost curious to see what new visions Arx will bring me as I become an active socialite.

My daughters are feuding. Astrid keeps telling Eleyna that her real name is 'Sinister Sally the Salmon Slapper'. I don't know what to do.

For some reason Palamon is sulking. It can't have anything to do with going to a falconry event and losing to a falcon. Totally unrelated.

I have found myself wondering of what might have been in certain past situations. But I need to remember that the present and the future are what I need to focus on. I cannot change the past.

It's been busy at the House of Gilden, making preparations to make sure our orchard trees last through the coming winter. I've sent directions to have all the leaves raked, and each tree looked at extensively for any rotting wood or leftover fruit on the ground around them. We also go about spraying the trunk and branches of the tree with different natural oils to keep pests away. They do like to burrow into the bark and kill off the tree. Hopefully come spring time our orchards will be bountiful once again.

I do love a productive week filled with brainstorming. I hate keeping my mind idle so having projects to work on is exhilarating.
I truly look forward to the many events Whisper House has planned.

I assure you that the 'traditionalists' of our Peerage do not view you in the best of ways.

A pretty little girl with bright blue eyes and a tuft of brown hair. An easy bairn, she hardly fusses, latches well, and spends most of her time cooing or sleeping. Relatively uneventful birth, the kind all midwives pray for. It was an honor being the first hands to hold you, little Mariska Eswynd. May your life be as blessed, as much as you are a blessing to your family.

The name of my birth family is nearly entirely wiped out, gone from the books by the victor Duke of Tor during a failed attempt at overthrowing the traditional ruling family.
I spent time as a ward before joining the Malespero family as a titled noble. Still, I learned the hard work of those that are not titled in my early days. It’s not the same thing, I was too young to remember much of my trauma, and being a ward for an esteemed noble house came with plenty of perks. It is why I continue to practice law—the challenge, yes, but also legal contracts bring equity to partnerships no matter their upbringing.
Traditionalists might view me in the best of ways, not a new noble, but a noble of blood. The Malespero household is a new household with strong traditional bloodlines to the past. We value blood and traditions and the names of the past that ruled the families of today.
And yet, the families that are new to mobility, hungry for status are forming their own generational story. Some come from discovered lands, others because they worked the system in the form of political favours, and others still by marriage or adoption. The truth is, nobility is a numbers game. If we have too many nobles, we’ll have more working nobles (tailors, blacksmiths etc..) because ultimately it is the crafters that propagate the economy. It is the soldiers that keep us safe. It is the cooks and servers that run our households.
Have too few nobles, and they become distant from the people. They no longer drive the economy. A society becomes more vulnerable to corruption, not less.
There is a balance that’s needed. This balance is likely to maintain itself. Too many nobles, and we’ll have more nobles part from their title and become proper working commoners and too few nobles, and there will be a gurgling pressure for power. As it stands right now, we have a bit of both scenarios, which tells we’re at a point of tension that will resolve itself in short order and (possibly) chaos. That is, until a new balance is found.

Damn, the man is old. He's got a crusty edge to him, too. But he starts off friendly, so that's nice (I'm sure it wasn't me that made him crusty!). Anyway, he's setup shop to take no-longer needed items and sell them to new homes. Lovely idea.

It was my honour to battle Kyra, Templar of Gloria today in the Sanctum of Genesis. A formiddable opponent, who came out the better of our contest. Though I know not what she is recruiting for, she is oath-sworn to protect. May the Gods watch over her and those who accompany her on her future endeavours.

On the way back home from running a few errands I took shelter in the physical refinement center to warm up from the Autumn chill. I should stop in there more often to watch and to see what faces I might know and new ones that I can meet.

Arriving back in Arx after such a long time, it seems familiar but also different. The streets seem busier and the weather is chillier. I guess I have summer to look forward to as Princess Isolde reminded me today during our chat. We spoke of some charitable work and I'm hoping to throw something together; perhaps a fundraiser of sorts. Seems I've work ahead of me reader, wish me luck.

Those who stray too far from Lagoma's purview ossify and suffocate.
Yet those who are too far removed from The Sentinel's province come apart at the seams.
There is a tendency to choose sides. To lean more towards one than the other. Improving this balance is a critical opportunity for an individual to develop their character. Because the truth is that people, communities and societies all require both. We require order to sustain that which is essential, and change to receive that which is vital.
Else we perish, either by flame or by stone.
