To work on something and have it be well-received is a joy that is hard to describe in words. It is, though, a great joy, and I'm thankful for the abilities that allow me to keep attempting to do this.

notes for those days of first winter snowfall when you wake realizing you left a window open - then you realize it's still autumn: ice, snow, delicate frost-rimed fir needle and birch - musk, if I can stomach the distillation of it because the last time was really fucking ill-advised and I will not forget how expensive that mistake was. Passing thought. Yes - otherwise, I will idle with an alternative that might compliment deadfall.

Dusty charcoal ash from spent incense, bitter black coffee, boozy cream liqueur.

Melted wax, flickering candlelight.

I briefly dropped in to the Golden Hart for the Memorial for the Mercier Vintners today. It was a quiet event, but not too somber. I hope they would have liked it.

You know, I was talking to some friends about elves and their long lives. We came to the conclusion that they do all the things they do because they get bored. You know, I think I would get bored if I lived forever too. I would probably pick up some strange habits or hobbies.

I fear I have erred greatly. Yet I can see no way to have avoided the fate before me. Somehow, I have found myself in need of adequate skill in self defense. Not something I can gain, unfortunately, during my scholarly work in the Great Archive.

And so, I found myself seeking the aid of perhaps the most competent and trustworthy warrior I know. My sister, Felicia Harrow. And to my still growing horror, she agreed!

Now I am no stranger to hard work. Indeed, I lay my offering on the altar of worthy toil at least daily. Even to the idea of physical exercise, I'd show no hesitance. But that speaks towards the mundane exercises of mere mortal men. Which is not how anyone with eyes describes Felicia at work. And knowing the inexhaustible manner my sister drives herself...

I fear she may unmake me.

When you threaten to tie someone down and torture them and they LAUGH... Am I losing my touch? Am I no longer terrifying of reputation? Is this what getting old feels like?

notes on a scent for a moment in time that probably never happened, and a conversation I never had: on Marine fog, thick as woolen sweaters - colder than rejection, swirls and vanishes at the shore with odd sweetness - damp soil, kelp and rotting wood soaked from endless rain, briny oysters, broken shells against a chapped lower lip, sharp - blood.

Thole, you said.

We both understood the word to mean different things,

neither one of us ever clarified.

A wonderful event and more than I could have wished for. Truly, we are blessed to have so much talent in this city and such brilliant company.

I am honoured to see such skill, talent and passionate upon my sands within my Hart.

Congratulations to all who participated and attended, especially to the very gracious Ambassador Bahiya'al'mathali of the Eurusi Consulate and the Princes Kenjay of Redrain and Patrizio of Pravus on a wonderful event and fine fundraiser.

I wish sometimes that there was a way for me to show others how dependable, generous, and humorous my husband can be. He is an acquired taste, to be sure, but any good vintner knows how to handle sour grapes.

What an exhausting and satisfying thing, to host such an event with such wonderful co-hosts. The venue was perfection, Prince Patrizio of Pravus was wonderful, and the same, of course, goes for Prince Kenjay.

We have the first half of the finale fight, Lord Ian Kennex! It was quite exciting to learn he is Porter's brother, and they fought each other in the end because of course they did!

And such generous donations, it was such a splendid turnout.

Husband Poem #7

We had been reading about unsolved murders.
'There is no way you could bury
a body in our gardens,
and I wouldn't know it.'
The Duke declares.
'It would have to be off the manor grounds, in the woods, or in the water.'
I nod.
'Sunk to the depths or where the animals would scatter you.'
He evaluates my answer, and nods.
We discuss how we would dispose of each other.

And so the tournament's first stage is concluded. It went well, I think, though not for me. To be eliminated in the first round would normally be embarrassing, but I was defeated by a worthy opponent. Still, I must repair to the training ring more often, I feel. Diplomacy is a poor sparring partner when swordplay is required.

This, Scholar? It's for as many of you as can get a piece at lunchtime. It's a Duplicitous Tart. My wife thinks she has it almost perfect, and is looking to hear what you all think of it before she starts selling them at the bakery.

Please, if you'd be so kind. It feels as though I've eaten little other than Duplicitous Tarts over the last couple of weeks, and sometimes a man just wants some meat of unidentified origin on a stick. Oh, I thought you weren't going to write that. Ah well. So much for that plan. I love you, Tanith, when you read this, and I'm sorry I couldn't face the last of the Tarts. It turns out I can actually have too much of a good thing. I know, I'm as shocked as you are.

My goodness. Who told you I am chased by demons? Or is this simply a very clever metaphor for how quickly I sometimes have to leave to attend to my duties, or perhaps you refer to demons of a more intangible sort? In any case, I hope someone will inform the demons they are meant to be chasing me, they've been quite lax in their duties. On second thought, perhaps do not.
