Two weeks on, and I still look for Orland whenever someone addresses Lord Amadeo. What a pleasant strangeness, to think us separate, and then remember after a moment that we two are one.

Someone dear to me said once that I would become a divisive figure. Maybe it's so, but if that's true, I have no regrets.

The Amadeo wedding was perfect, The reception was massive, I was certain I was going to have to stab someone before the night was over but it was perfect and I am thanking every one of the gods for this. We all need more good moments.

After many years away, I decided to come back to the city. A good choice of timing, as I can immediately get back to work with some outfits for the masquerade everyone seems so excited about. One lord told me of something he saw at the last he attended, and I tell you now, these people either have impressive imaginations or the best black market connections. So many with their heads in the clouds.

I still really don't have a lot to say. This feels strange for me.

By assuming a shape, by taking a side, by making plain the intention or making the plan visible is to court attack. Instead of this, making yourself vulnerable and open to attack - make yourself adaptable. Speak softer. Be seen less. Take the time to make yourself formless, shapeless, as free flowing as water or sand. Everything changes. Even as you leave your enemy with an empty fist, remember that nothing is certain. Nothing at all.

Relationship Note on Roran

Eloquent speaker with insights and useful suggestions. The sermon he gave at the Great Cathedral was just an example of what this Archlector is caable of doing.

Visiting each of the shrines helps restore a sense of inner peace, even if just for a little while, At least till the next 'bad' thing happens.

I find myself wondering if there is any guilty pleasure the more traditional folk of the Isles indulge in. I have spent some time among them this past year, visiting with fellow vassals of Duchess Tyde. Among them all, I found plenty to compliment and enjoy. Yet? There was little evidence of those things which the mainland revels in - dances, flirtations, lush gardens, pets, spices. There are some explanations, such as trade difficulties for islands and harsh weather in the northern Mourning Sea, but there is something more to it.

Perhaps they really like chocolate.

Archlector Roran's service a few days ago sticks with me still. Work put in, spent, for some day unknown, in years to come. I feel I'm so often focused on that rather than on the moment just ahead.

I find I don't like thinking about how I go about my business. It's easier just to let it be what it is.

I know this isn't making much sense. Maybe I should have given it a few more days before coming here. Maybe then my thoughts would be sorted.

It was a wonderful day. A lazy afternoon spent by the stone pools while my Hart was busy and full.

A rich conversation and catch-up with Mistress Ilira and then later a fine drink and invitation with his highness, Prince Patrizio.

I think I could get used to enjoying more such delights.

Quite enjoyable.

Okay, I'll admit it. I'm often made breathless by the beauty of a fine night where the moon is heavy and the stars are bright.

That's not so say I don't love a sunny day, but there's something in the blood that sings when the sun finally starts to fade.

I suppose in a way it makes sense. After all, outlaws, lovers, poets and artists oft do their best work in the dead of night.

I have returned to the city. It would appear it does not matter where I reside or for how long; there is always something to be done, always something to be rectified. While my time away was needed, it is good to be back in Arx.

Journal

The Merchant had been a very careful sort his whole career but (as so happens with those who deal primarily in criminal exchanges) succumbed to his own hubris.

It's one thing to murder common serfs and no-name cobblers and grocers - people who might owe you money, as long as they aren't well connected. Those who believe the Lyceum, and the city of Setarco in particular, to be a dangerous realm for conducting business either don't know, or have little appreciation for, the considerable planning and effort that goes into a good poisoning or removal of competition. Who are they? Do they have any potentially dangerous allies? Any cousins at court? Any second or third cousins at court? Have they ever received compliment from a favored courtier? Or the nobility? You see, every detail and angle must be anguished over and the potential blowback weighed against the practicality of the deed.

Well, the merchant simply got sloppy, that's all. I happened upon his office one eve whilst he was in quarrel with a well dressed, but poorly groomed, man. You know the sort? Flowing, fitted silk couture of fine tailoring, every detail immaculately pressed and color coordinated; with long greasy hair, dark circles under the eyes, white flakes on the shoulders and stubble? He didn't look like much but I remembered him for somewhere...

Belinha always insisted on name and face recognition. She was obsessive about it. She would have me describe and name persons I'd met or seen only once. She would ask quite suddenly, sometimes weeks later, "Who was the woman we met at the fall party in the gardens wearing the aeterna gown and a red flower?", "What color were her eyes and can you describe her nose?"

I had met this well dressed but dumpy looking man at a party two years prior. He was an unassuming man but a bit of a financial savant and he kept the books for a young shipping company whose principal was the protege of an underling to the Pravus Minister of Production, who reported directly to Duke Piero.

"He's undercutting our prices and moving in on our shipping lanes," the merchant seethed after the meeting had ended. "I know him - I mean, I've seen him before," I explained.

Given that each day brings a topic to research, it is a boon that angeline has a Blancbier. She is a commonoer to whom I offered tutoring, She wanted to follow me to arx when I left but her parents wisely made her wait until she turned 18. She is a bright and precocious sort. I'm sure she will accomplish much.

This week I had the opportunity this week to meet with others to exchange information on a particular topic. I went thinking I had a wealth of information to share and quickly ralized how much I did not know. It is a critical reminder for any scholar or person really that there is always more to learn no matter how much one thinks one knows

It has been a week of interesting times. Meeting new faces and getting things ready for the family as they have arrived back into the city. I look forward to the continued involvement of Greenmarch in the social circles of our society, and, I thank everyone who has been kind enough to come by.
