A gentle note to myself: finish at least some of what you've started.

I turned my ankle trying to help a friend. Well, that's not exactly how it happened but that is the story I'm going to go with because it certainly sounds better.

How do you capture the eye of the storm? The calm. That sense of clarity. Is it a blank page? Is it nothing but shadow? Is it colours swirling together all at once? I can feel it. The smudges. My fingertips. A splatter of rain and the howl of the wind. Parchment is tricky when wet. Bring extra brushes. Maybe a bucket.

Bloody Abyss, I'll be glad once this damnable campaign in the Oksehode is done. What were meant to be finished in weeks has ground on for the better part of a year, with more fucking marching yet to be had, afore our warriors draw near the last stronghold.

Sea and Sky strike me down if I lie: I'll burn their hall and piss on the ashes.

Today's tea is an apple tea with almonds and chocolate. It's very delicious. I believe it might be a Mercier tea, though I'm not entirely sure. Whoever blended it, it's delicious.

As the temperature warms and summer comes, my children spend more time outside. The laughter rings through the air, and their joy and fun is contagious.

I have a really great mask, and yet I've never managed to get myself out to any masquerade party with it. I'm more of a tavern-party type, I guess. I have a couple of lovely gowns and maybe it's about time I wore one along with the mask for a fancy shin-dig.

Spring and summer open up easier travel around the Northlands, which I have been taking advantage of. Duties, after all, aren't just required in the city of Arx. I enjoy visiting the families and people around the various holdings, both to discuss current business as well as catch up a bit socially. Of course I love returning to Farhaven when it's possible, and I suspect mother loves hearing about what's going on in the city when I'm able to visit. The trips aren't as long as I might like, and they are a touch cumbersome considering all that is going on around the Compact. Despite that, they are trips that need to be taken, I think, even if they may be harder to navigate than in years past.

What an unexpected delight...it appears that I shall have an escort to the Masquerade after all. It would do me well to have an opportunity to exercise my social muscles again.

I was gifted a sword not too long ago. It is an unimpressive looking thing but of incredibly impressive build; I'm sure it does the trick. It is a double edged sword and it bears an inscription along its fuller that was written in a language foreign to me. I sent out word and met with several who attempted to assist me in its translation. I am very appreciative of the efforts of many, and the willingness of many others to assist.

It has since been translated. The inscription reads, "Justice tempers power".

The man who assisted me in its final translation is a bit of a foreigner and recent arrival himself. He asked me what the inscription means and without my usual rumination provided him an answer which I hope satisfied his immediate query.

Clearly the sword itself, as any weapon might, conveys a certain amount of power to the wielder. This is especially true if the one holding the sword is surrounded by others who are not also holding swords. The message itself seems to remind the bearer of the sword that their absolute freedom and ability to use it upon another must be counterbalanced by fairness and reason. Here we have an example, perhaps, of Justice within.

Perhaps another holding the sword is deficient, intellectually or otherwise (perhaps only by education) in what is fair and what is reason. This one, not necessarily a dullard but perhaps less thoughtful than the first, may find their absolute freedom and ability to use the sword counterbalanced by knowing its misuse would be answered with swords brought back upon themself. Here would be Justice without.

And perhaps yet another holding the sword is not deficient intellectually or otherwise. Perhaps this one simply has a lust for the absolute freedom and ability to wield the sword. Or this one wishes to be feared or revered and the sword offers a path to achieving these. This one has no Justice within, and no fear or respect or thought for Justice without. Their absolute freedom and ability to use the sword is counterbalanced by the swords of the many in retaliation. This is also a form of Justice, one we all find familiar, and which we often simply call 'Justice'.

Of the three, it is the last we often call upon to receive Sentinel's Justice. But it was the first righteous two who were, and are, the true beneficiaries of it.

This is by no means a full and complete summation of all the possible implications of this "Justice tempers power". I'm sure you can think of several points in your own life, or that you have observed, where power was or was not tempered by Justice.

I love traveling - it's a reminder that the world is always bigger than we expect it to be, that the people contained within it are ultimately quite similar in nature and temperament about the things that matter. Show me a woman who doesn't want a roof over her head, a stomach full of a warm meal, and a glass of their favorite. I'll wait.

I haven't had the chance to travel much, of late. Not since Bastion. A rather bleak and terrifying punctuation mark on my travels thus far, to be sure, but hopefully it's a comma or a semi-colon rather than a period.

I've got a boulder that I've claimed for myself on the outskirts, where the waters of the bay lap against the rough sand beaches. I write this entry from atop of it, under the light of the stars and moon. I wait for no one in particular. Being alone with my thoughts is well enough. The clamor of the city can be difficult to escape. It can all feel so... close.

Wide open skies. An endless horizon.

It's a good vantage, my little boulder is.

Attended the SURPRISE birthday party for Archduchess Jaenelle. I think it's safe to say she was thoroughly surprised. It was a fine time, even if no one DID see what I did. That will show me for choosing the sparkly drink.

As you reminded me, you have far more time than I do. I believe in your ability to become an art history scholar. In fact, I would be quite pleased to hear your take on the history of the piece of art you acquired from the sanctuary recently. Perhaps we could work together to have you give a public lecture? I am certain others in the city would find it worthwhile.

The surprise party last night was exciting! A surprise rather for everyone, I think. The birthday girl did not expect to be having house guests that day, which I think might put me out a bit if it were me, but of course not everyone is the same, are they? I do hope that she had a good time. I never did get the chance to circle around and get through the gauntlet of well wishers to say hello. I've become a bit dull in my middle age, leaving parties early to tuck my children into bed at night, but I can't find it in my heart to complain. They're wonderful children. Every parent says that, of course. Well, most parents. But in my case, I'm sure that it's more true than it would otherwise be!

Of course, the guests were surprised as well, owing to whatever was put in the drinks. I'm rather glad I noticed something was off before I went off and had one, myself. It wouldn't have done, I don't think, for me to have come home and complained that I couldn't read Livia and Zelde their bedtime story because the words were disagreeably marching off the page.

I DO wish Zelde would stop choosing that rainbow princess book to read every time it's her turn to choose. I may have to see that it's accidentally lost somewhere.

There could have been an assortment of other ways to have dealt with the problem that I became. However, mother always knew the best way to make a point.

Whatever that point was supposed to be.
