I've said it before, but I think that it duly bears repeating - I abhor the winter. Abhor. My third winter here in Arx, and while I've finally acquired warm enough clothing that I don't feel as if the gods are consigning me to a life of Abyssal frost, it's still the kind of thing that makes me pine for my apartments in Setarco.

As such, it was a delight to be 'make an excuse' to head south for the Lantern Festival recently in Ischia. Lady Ophira's planning for the event was marvelous, and even if I'd not had as much a chance to dance as I should like, the warmth - and lightening of the burden on my soul after recent months - was quite welcome.

I am pleased to be dressing some delightful beauties in a handful of days in new winter fabrics from Lady Ivy Blackram's goats. I am delighted to have been able to work with her and all of our other friends who devoted time, silver, energy and knowledge to the endeavor.

I had such fun at the Masquerade, and I expect it will be telling when I shake out the dress I had made to wear about. It was a grand time designing, even if I am still concealing my best secret for other trades and other masks.

One week. It's been one eeek since we welcomed Calo. So much has changed and ter it hasnt. I didn't realize you could love someone so much until now. Ive lost sleep, but it's fine. Our house is working on its new routine and believe me..Calo lets you know when he is in need if somes. He has a set of lungs that most commanders would be jealous of. Leadership is in his future after all..

Also...Rocco has been taken in the roll of manny. And the dogs? They don't leave his side. Ever.

Returning to Arx may have been the best idea I've ever had! This week has been such fun, scholar! With the snow, I feel like a child again! I got to die twice in a snowball fight AND win a lovely chapeau. Then on to cider tasting at the Badger Boardinghouse with such a lot of wonderful company. Some may complain about the cold, but I say winter brings a whole new life to Arx, if you only bother to look for it!

I very much enjoyed the Oathlands Masquerade. Duke Christoph really outdid himself, although I do wish I'd been able to guess which dragon was High Lady Alis. I'm rather certain she wore a dragon mask. But there were a lot of dragons there.

Winter came earlier than expected this year and we just had enough time to make a few touch and go runs up and down the coast before the real storms start hit the coast.

We'll be back at it soon enough, but for now my purse is heavier, my heart a little lighter, and and there's work do be done in town.

Hopefully, we can get much of it done before we're casting off again.

Cider is delicious. Lord Michael had a wonderful thought to have a cider tasting at the Badger. I think the spiced was my favourite, and then the mulled. I was less fond of the robust though.

Mind you, I might be a little bit tipsy after all that cider.

And Master Audgrim's rose leather confections of clothing are wonderful.

In Iriscal, there is a shrine to the Queen of Endings.

There, I met a woman who was wise and spoke to me of many truths I already knew about death. I told her what I knew, and she nodded her head, even though I was wrong, and she told me a great number of other things, all of which have made me ashamed at my previous naivete. And in the end, I was convinced, as she was, that embracing death is not possible merely by word or belief, but by deed and dedication to perfection.

It is time for me to seek more counsel on this matter.

The first of the raffles has officially ended.
Parents of Lying in wait and Plunging Hunger brought them home to share a story of mystery, deceit, and a treacherous prince. A very naughty prince at that, which while they might have been trying to give the young new parents a better story, best watch out in the future if they are to attempt a similar direction of stealing pieces from those that are simply attempting to find their twins.

Countess Aella Ravenseye and Princess Denica Thrax have named the Knights of Solace as their champions to the raffle and they will have a donation made in their name to such.

The second round of the raffle is underway. The pieces have been sent out and all of those that have entered the raffle have been notified. I look foward to learning how these two find each other.

The third round pieces are starting to take shape. And will be on display at the shop (Emporium of Curiosity, 2 SE from City Center) until they are completed.

So my pet scarf seems to be doing his job, and doing it well. My neck is much warmer with him wrapped around it, Scholar, although I often have to leave him at home. A lot of the shrines and other places don't want to welcome a scarf, however much he just wants to lounge in peace.

I've felt like I've been holding my breath for the last couple of months, waiting for reports to come in from my traveling library. Letters have trickled back from my librarian, though, and it appears that the little cart full of books has been trundling along quite happily among the little Oathlander villages, giving out books and trading for new ones. It means so much to have created this in my mother's memory, its books gathered from here and there, and the colorful wagon painted by my own hand. Perhaps there might be some few left there who remember Livia Ruger's name despite all the years she has been gone.

A beachside camp journal...
The tide is in and the birds have been slaughtered. Time to settle in and give the waters some time to set back. Roast bird. Dongles with massive wingspan and evil pecking needles for beaks.

Step one. A frying pan works great to ding and dong the damn birds.
Step two. Collect firewood.
Step three. Remember to shave the bird and clean it first. This will make you sick if you don't.
Step four. Any birds that decide to come and play cannibal can be added to the menu

I got so lost trying to get to that party that I broke the mask (sorry -- I did fix it) before I even got there. Gods, the beauty of the event turned the air in my body to ice. It stilled the beating of my heart and ached, wishing that I had made the costume I envisioned.

So did the weather.

Only managed to lean, and lean with style until the third missive --

Well.

I'm due for a long soak in near-scalding water soon.

My dreams have been so strange of late. Nothing out of the ordinary or spectacular, so don't start writing to me in a bid to inquire about them in the hopes of finding some juicy tidbit to squirrel away for your later use.

No, no. They've just been strange dreams that happen when you make changes in your lifestyle. You know, like going to Dame Ida Ferron's shop, only to discover that she's not selling blades anymore. Well, she is, but she's expanded her business into wagons that growl and purr, elaborate contraptions like the old clock tower but significantly smaller, libraries that fit in the palm of your hand, and some sort of mash made from cauliflower.

I successfully made it to my destination in that dream with my ten jugs of sugary fruit drink after encountering Peggy at some point. She's still got it.

Really, that's just one small segment of that dream that seemed to stretch on for weeks and contain so much content. Needless to say it was an amusing dream.

A blockade is a tricky thing to maintain. The larger the harbor, the greater the challenge. A body need bring enough ships to close the port, patrol the coasts in all directions (lest runners land outside your net and simply walk in or out), with warriors enough to defeat any push out, or attempt by allies of your foe to break the blockading fleet in battle while it's spread.

Unless you've allies or armies enough to besiege them by land as well, you're trying to strangle an entire island, which few folk can manage, as no foe would live there if the isle couldn't support itself in the first place.

Even with all that: superior strength at sea, well deployed, well led, and well ordered, with a siege by land of matching competence, then thousands of high spirited warriors need wait. Oft for months on end. Goddess willing, no disease takes root while waiting aboard ships.

But when it works.. when the foe is strangled, withers, and cracks, it is a total victory, won with a shard of the losses that would have been had by direct storm. Some folk call me impatient, and mayhap they're right, but a good hunter needs patience when their prey is cornered.

I'm a very bloody patient hunter. If my temper runs short with you, then you're not my prey. Be glad of this.
