On lunacy and other maladies of the mind:
The contemporary practice of institutionalization should be reserved for those who lack the capacity to reason for themselves or have expressed a desire to bring harm upon others. In some instances, if there is a concern for the well-being of self, voluntary or involuntary admissions may be warranted -- especially if the patient has ruminated upon the termination of their own life or, whether it be by written or verbal admission, conveyed suicidal ideation to a peer.
I caution against the use of restraints or psychosurgery, as proposed by some of my colleagues, for there is no evidence to suggest that this form of treatment is any less barbaric than the nervous illness itself. Instead, every effort should be made to discover the root cause of disease -- be it dysfunction of thought, historical trauma, or interference from another body system. So too must immediate distinctions be established between those afflicted by true psychosis and melancholia, which may share some characteristics -- retardation or agitation of movement, despondence, unusual affect, poverty of speech, disorganization.
To do so, it is recommended that suspicious clinicians seek out and obtain collateral information from the patient's close family members and friends. Chronicity may be an indicator of a pervasive impairment and assist in the ruling out of recent or temporary conditions (e.g. grief following the loss of a loved one or change in condition of living).

I bought myself a horse at the Halfshav auction. Me. The one who is most definitely NOT a horse whisperer. I've just now started learning how to ride, so leave it to me to choose the most spirited filly I could find. And she looks to be wearing socks. This should be interesting. I am a woman of medicine and blades, not---large animals. My father is laughing at me, I know it.

What was a tranquil moment for me in The Grotto was ruined tonight! It might /well/ be fashionable to dilute a glass of wine with a splash of cool water, but when that water arrives in a torrent great enough to throw the wine from the glass right up in your face, I beg to differ. Jumping into the pools should be banned.

Paths.
We all walk them. We choose them with each footfall and those choices are to be honored, even if they are not agreed with. We are free of shackles that bind us to doing things mindlessly. Yet, there are others that we willingly take. I am always in awe when I see or hear of one taking the deepest commitment of faith, oath and fealty by becoming Godsworn. It is a deep choice. It is one that asks steep sacrifices to one's path. It is an honor to see those that take it.
I am also always struck by how and why people choose the paths they take. Where they stand at a crossroads and veer to the right instead of the left, or the left instead of the right. I enjoy watching the mortal life unfold as a series of these choices and actions.

It's been eight months since I was last in Arx. I never realized how much the Crownguard Tower had become home until I was spending so much time away from it. I can't even count how many gifts I need to get for those that had to endure my absence. But missions are missions.

I will freely admit that I seldom have cause to ride horses in my day-to-day life. I haven't needed to since I was young, and I was clumsy at it for the time that I was able to ride, at that. Still, I consider myself capable of at least sitting in the saddle and guiding a horse where I want it to go much of the time.
The last horse I took out was a mare named Mahogany. I have no earthly idea why, but she seems to tolerate me far better than most of the horses I've ridden, and I find myself rather taken. I don't think there's any real danger of finding myself in a position to be prancing about on horseback much as a pugilist who largely remains in Arx, but I do have a journey coming up.
Perhaps she'll enjoy some time on the road to neighboring cities.

Mistress Talia has truly outdone herself and I would encourage everyone in the Crownlands to ensure that their house gets one of the coveted spots in her next show! She truly is one of the most gifted tailors I have ever met! I simply cannot wait to see what she does with a Faith collection and I'll have to speak with Archlector Wylla to ensure Jayus is well represented!
