Relationship Note on Rukhnis
In an attempt at wit, I made a joke in extremely poor taste about a medallion I'd won in a contest at an event put on to benefit people in the Lowers, believing the medallion was made by our Minister of Medicine, Rukhnis al-Katibi. Rukhnis and I arrived in Arx around the same time, and I am not ashamed to say that, after many long adventures and experiences together, she is one of my closest and most trusted friends. She saved my life many times with her skill in medicine, and my soul many times with her wisdom.
One manifestation of her wisdom is her ability to temper my pride, and prevent me from causing harm where she knows I meant none. She wrote to me recently, and the letter is worth reproducing here in full:
Lord Rysen,
I wish you to write a letter of apology to Miss Zettie Bissel, Crooked Tree Court, the green door on the north corner. She is a young woman of fourteen years whom I treated shortly after I began working at the Commons Clinic. Two of the fingers on her right hand were crushed in an accident with a wagon gate and had to be removed. Her heart was nearly broken by this because it was her life's dream to become a jewelcrafter one day. However, I assured her that I had seen others with injuries as serious as her own who had nevertheless learned to be so clever with their remaining fingers that their dexterity yet surpassed those whose hands were intact. When I wanted simple medallions for the wellness festival I commissioned her to create them, telling her they would be won and worn by noble lords and ladies and others among the great people of Arx. I doubt that she reads the Whites herself, but if word ever reaches her ears of what you wrote about your own prize, she will be devastated. I hope you will tell her that you did not mean it, and you only wrote as you did because you wished to play a joke on me instead.

I truly meant no disrespect to the fine work of Miss Zettie Bissel of Crooked Tree Court. The craftsmanship on the medallion was superb, and I was, in fact, making a poor attempt at humor. I have already written to Miss Zettie personally, and in recompense, I am happy to sponsor her apprenticeship to a leading jeweler of the Crafter's Guild, where I am most confident she'll excel. I will be wearing my second place medallion with pride everywhere I go for two weeks, and spending some time in the Shrine of the Thirteenth to reflect on my actions and seek greater wisdom for the future.

Relationship Note on Fianna
How good it was to learn more about how to joust in the saddle with Duchess Fianna. I hardly think there is a soul in Arvum that knows more about horses than she, and I can already feel my technique begin to improve with Rosie.
It doesn't hurt that she enjoys the Stormwall Estate's arena far better than the training area we have set up at the Crown stables. A change of scenery, I suppose.

Relationship Note on Ida
I can always recommend the work of Dame Ida. Not just the quality, which is sublime, and not just the designs, which inspire tears at the beauty that can be placed into tools for such crude work as battle, and the honouring of Jayus in that work. But because she is a good person who has never asked me about her safety when I have had to ask for her skills on a mission for the Faith. Any who are good deserve our support.
Of course in Dame Ida's case her work is sublime and beautiful too - so even if you are more pragmatic it is a sensible recommendation. If you wish to know how good? I gave one of her weapons as a gift to a Legate - and I hope we all know how I feel about honouring the senior ranks of the Faith, and thus how high my demands are for such a present.

After being induced to think about the origin of steelsilk all day by one of Carmen's journals, I have developed no useful theories. Instead, I filled several bits of paper with drawings of knightly silkworms. A part of me feels accomplished by this even if society was not enriched by the breakthrough.

I feel for the commoners. They eat, drink, love, and hurt, just like the rest of us. I know that commoners thrive under the various great and vassel houses. However, I am a simple man, and I look at my personal wealth, thinking, what do I do with this? Do I buy an expensive drink, do I get yet another fancy bed?
No, I believe that I, a noble of simplicity, should find a way to donate half my income to the common man, to a charity that can truly lift the spirits of the common people! Yes, half my income, because half my income still leaves me with far more income than I can possibly spend. So why -not- donate half of it?
Keep in mind, this is my personal income, not the income of my house. I simply do not believe that a simple man such as myself needs such a high amount of funds all for himself. So I hope that any noble or royal who reads this suggests good charities for me to think about, and perhaps even joins me in giving even more to the common people. There are many charitable nobles out there, so I hope that anyone who hasn't yet donated to charity will feel inspired!

Spring has returned to Arx and with it a certain magic that leaves me tingling with thoughts of new opportunities and new possibilities.
Good things for others seem to be blossoming with the flowers that reach for the sun. It's lovely to see love is in the air for so many as well.
Seeds planted seem to grow so quickly these days. It makes me smile.

As a young child, I sometimes dreamed of being royal - while asleep, while distracting myself during court events, while playing with friends, I might imagine being anything from a young princess to a reigning queen. But, for all the history (lofty and sordid alike) associated with my name, I never actually imagined that I might wind up having a *right* to call myself 'princess'. Yet it seems that I might perhaps get to do so, and in the near future. Even amidst all the perils and wonders of our times, I confess that this personally feels quite thoroughly strange.

I've been going through my paperwork, and I've realised there have been an increasing number of requests on the Lodge's time. This has not been a bad thing; I see it as a compliment and acknowledgement of the work we've been doing. I'm looking at how best to manage these; I don't wish to simply prioritise those of high standing, as politically relevant as that might be, and I lack the necessary knowledge of the Compact to know where best to direct our efforts.
I'm looking at ways we can help more. I'm certain we'll find it, but I need to look back at how the various discipleships expanded. I wonder who would know

As my shoulder was still quite stiff from the hit I took from Lord Michael Bisland at the recent joust Lady Tesha hosted, I took an afternoon to paint a new donkey painting for Veronica. Rather than mountains to climb, I painted apples to eat and Keaton Keep in the distance. I think it turned out very well, considering. It's already been hung in her suite where she will be sure to enjoy it.
I am still looking for the donkey painting that was lost or stolen, but I suppose it's gone for good. I've received no word to indicate its current whereabouts and condition.

I caught a glance at your horrifying thought about the potential source of the Steelsilk that you wear, preciously imported from Cardia. I hope you'll be happy to hear that the process of making Steelsilk is at once much more horrifying and much more wondrous then collecting silken threads from worms. Anyone who wears steelsilk is wearing the result of an intricate process that defies the mind itself to create an impossible fabric, a treasure built upon the sacrifices of the craftsmen who made it.

I had my first encounter with one of the Mirrormasks while I was enjoying the starlight in the observatory. It was a very interesting experience and I'm left wondering if all the reflections I'll encounter will be quite as dramatic.
