My Duchess got older today! Of course, she does so every day (and every second, for that matter), as do we all. But of particular note was her birthday party, held at the Pravus house within the Lycene quarter. In spite of a few less-than-couth interludes, it seemed to go well. And the unexpectedly collaborative nature of the entertainer's song was particularly effective in providing amusement. In spite of the strong impulse to take it all as proof of just how far beyond youth I must now be, I have to admit that I rather markedly enjoyed myself.

Relationship Note on Barric

Prince Barric Grayson has chosen to indicate he cares little for his personal honor by refusing to respond to peer's challenge. I made no public spectacle of my challenge, and I gave the prince one final opportunity to name his champion or submit his apology, but he has deigned to ignore the demands of his honor.

Thus, I feel free in announcing that Prince Barric Grayson publicly admits his fault in writing words of an honorless and unkind nature regarding his kinswoman Lady Dawn shortly after she left the city to secure the lives of everyone in the Compact, including his own. I take his refusal to meet this challenge as an admission of his failure to his family, his house, and his honor.

I am sure the esteemed leaders of House Grayson will be very proud to hear of his effusive apology in maligning one of their own.

What the actual fuck is going on these days? I think I'll stay in the estate a touch long and let the big wigs suss this one out. They know where to find my sword if they have need of it.

Relationship Note on Leo

(Footnote attached to a diary entry)

(Duke?) Leo and I met on the basis of trade, and we've diligently continued as allies these many months. I'm surprised and delighted to have heard the good news about his marriage, even if I myself will diligently resist such matters for as long as possible. Beyond this, I would be happy to one day grow our relationship from business to friendship.

I don't always manage to flip back, but when I do, it is to avoid the blades of hulking lumbering oafs.

Relationship Note on Harald

(Footnote attached to a diary entry)

Uncle Harald was one of the few adults that felt truly on my side when I was younger. I could always count on him to give me wise advice, and he even let me get away with a few minor mishaps. It's a blessing to have his counsel in Arx, not least of which because he also won't replace me as Voice.

There's nothing like somebody doing a backflip away from your weapon swing to make you feel like a big, hulking, lumbering oaf. I swear to the gods and all who read this journal that I have never, not once, ever lumbered anywhere. I am also very convinced I am not an oaf, although an oaf probably wouldn't know if they were an oaf, would they? But an oaf also wouldn't know THAT, so I that is why I am confident.

Perhaps I need to start doing more runs and jumping jacks to get my exercise.

There are pikes outside the Velenosa estate. Atop these pikes are the heads of people. The bugs will come soon if they have not already.

It almost makes me feel as if I am in the Thraxian ward.

Marriage must be very difficult for the great nobles of Arvum. Not only are you required to honor a fidelity contract but you must chose a single bride or groom.

Sometimes, you must also fight another lord who has the frightening title of "Sword" of something. Not to mention the problems of picking your bride or groom.

I am glad this is not a concern I will have being a humble courtesan. I am free to show those I love my care for them without worries of intrigue. I need not worry about marrying to continue my line, or bring in prestige for my family.

Of course, being a commoner, should I ever marry it would be because someone had claimed my heart completely. And should that person then suggest we be allowed to also have other loves--

I would cut out his heart to remind him that it is mine.

It is important, in these oh so trying times, to remember the good things in life. Like how I once saw an actor sit on his own delicate bits so forcefully that the show had to be cancelled for the evening.

It should be known that my brother, Lord Damon Wyrmguard, after careful thought and consideration; no longer speaks for my house, myself or my family. His voice to speak for mine is suspended from this point forward until I see fit. This is with a heavy heart and a sound mind I make this request.

May the circles of life keep us, protect us and keep us connected.

The caravan trip here was more peaceful than I've found the city to be... I'm not sure what to make of a place where a Princess blithely invites a butcher to be here friend, it's comforting on one hand and suspicious on the other. Not to mention I managed to find a job shortly after stepping foot into a tavern, the pace is so fast and the only thin that is familiar is Julea. Surprise.

Looking through the shops in the great market has been about as tiring as I'd expect. Especially in leathers as they are still the lightest clothing I have. I wonder if the southern folk will care overmuch if I walk around only half clothed? It's beginning to be an appealing alternative to silks and such to stay in this weather.

Relationship Note on Valencia

Valencia is much more withdrawn than I expected amongst her family! Yet still enchanting. Some friction between her and her cousin Deva; I certainly hope I can help them get along better, if I can...especially since I'd like to spend more time with both of them.

Relationship Note on Esera

Every time I meet with the Archduchess of Flowers, I am moved by her grace and depth of spirit. She apologizes for things she should not even where other won't, and takes account for those that others would never. She does not deserve the position that others have put her in, but she is certainly a liege worthy of respect.

And I did not think it was possible to surprise her, but I think I did, this evening.

I have arrived in the city some time after my Lord Somhairle. The weather is hot, the people to haughty, and the lack of tasks to attend to is dull. I am not sure if I will like being south, but I am sure that this tumultuous time will need my attentions. Until I decide how best to spend my time in the city, the first order of business is finding something lighter to wear.

To the Faithful Reader:

It is a hobby of mine to read the white journals. Not the contemporary ones, nor the ones useful for historical reference, necessarily; those fall into the category of research, and research is work, not play.

And yes, even I play, sometimes. More rarely, these days, than I might wish. But I often explore the white journals of long-dead philosophers, artists, poets, and other such individuals. The twists and turns of their minds are fascinating, and there is such beauty in those simple words or careful images, long forgotten. For example, one that returns to my mind more and more often these days:

"Supposing that I should have the courage
To let a red sword of virtue
Plunge into my heart,
Letting to the weeds of the ground
My sinful blood,
What can you offer me?
A gardened castle?
A flowery kingdom?
What? A hope? "

The original poem ends with another line, but I have omitted it. Not because it is not a fair ending, but because I feel the question remains unanswered, when I ponder it.

The events of today worry me greatly. What I saw was the single most sorrowful thing I have ever witnessed, and it broke my heart. To see something so pure, so beautiful as the very air we breathe... snuffed out in painful anguish.... Hours later it still brings tears to my eyes.

How do I stop this from happening?

I need to prepare, for if what I did today had this result... what is going to happen with the others I come into contact with?
