Balance of my stay at Arx:
I've met a few delightful people.
I've been in a ritual of the Thirteen.
I got a beautiful dress and a horrible scarf.

And I still want a welcome party.

The Grand Melee is tonight, and two winners will be declared - the most stylish and accomplished fighter, and the last person standing.

I don't expect to win either of them, frankly. The line-up is intimidating. But I intend to fight my best for Valardin, for Wyrmguard, for Gloria and for Limerance.

Relationship Note on Orazio

As well as wise, Orazio seems to always be one step ahead of whatever anyone is thinking. That kind of insight is going to be vital to the Faith as we face the new year.

Relationship Note on Ailith

Ailith allowed Preston to wear her favour in the Tournament of Roses jousting. Sadly Preston didn't bring it much honour, and went out in the first round. But it is important that the faith support each other.

Relationship Note on Edain

His Grace, Prince Edain of Sanctum, High Lord of Valardin,

I do apologise, but your face when you realised you were speaking to an untitled commoner was one I will treasure. I know the nobility are prevalent in Arx, and there is the assumption of title; that the Lodge might be seen as knights-to-be and that I would be the master of this; but it was sadly mistaken. Your discomfort was not meant as insult, I am aware, but it is a joy to the heart of a lowly disciple of Petrichor to see High Lord expect the natural order so readily.

It's been years. Since before the siege, we worked on this. The ground has been broken, the walls constructed, our tower risen.

The Lodge of Petrichor stands in the Gray Forest.

We're seeing a semi-regular passage of folk moving through, even in the winter. We're delivering meat to Arx on a semi-regular basis which is providing us a small income. I'm preparing a hunt; something in the depths of winter, to show the charitable and generous nature of the nobility that call Arx home. I'm advertising my services and seeking to hone my own skills. Finally, I seem to be moving past this winter of my soul; for all snow lies on the ground, I feel warm within.

The Jousting Final's could not have been more exciting. Master Tristan's eventually victory comes as a surprise to no one, but there were so many stories that played out as the tourney unfolded. There are some many stories I could talk about, and I will. Everyone performed boldly and with skill and honored themselves and their opponents.

Sir Tarrant Moore, only just arrived in the city made a brilliant performance and I think he's made a name for himself that is going to be on the people's lips for some time now. I look forward to seeing more of this Knight's achievements in the days to come.

However, Herald Steve tilting against Dame Esoka warmed my heart greatly. The Dame was gracious in victory, and Herald Steve was gracious in defeat.

Relationship Note on Niamh

It's been months now, and the loss of Niamh is starting to fade to a dull ache. It feels like I'm finally getting used to her absence. I almost don't want it to; it feels like pain when you lose someone should last longer, somehow.

But wounds heal, given time. There'll always be a scar there -- a part of myself I'll never wholly get back -- but I no longer feel a stabbing loss when I look over and see her chest of things piled in my room. Or when I climb up into the treehouse, and remember our first 'adventure' together.

But she'll never be fully forgotten. And someday, when I find a griffon and set off an an aerial adventure for real, I'll remember that first adventure we had together, making up wild stories in the treehouse.

I'll remember, and I'll think of you.

I've come across some Journals where an individual is listing off some animals and their attributes in case future generations don't have these creatures as we do today. I think that is a very fine endeavor, though I am not writing this now to add to that list. Rather, I thought I would make note of something we have in Ostria: there is an old house in the Outer Round that's built of bones. Not entirely, mind. But bones are incorporated within and without. There are large bones, and a good few of them, as well as small bones, and of those there are a good deal more and then some. Some are quite recognizable while others are a complete mystery, even to Scholars. There are a few local Scholars, though, that suspect it was an ancient creature that has since gone extinct. They have drawn many pictures of how they think it may have once looked, and there are entire treatises on what its purpose was and just what it ate and even what the world was like while it was alive - but it is all conjecture.

Other Scholars dismiss the idea that the bones are real entirely. Because the home owner is vehemently against anyone removing even the smallest bone from his abode, no one can actually perform any tests upon them. Thus there have sprung up an opposition group to the aforementioned Scholars that claim the bones are, in fact, an artist's manufacture. This artist has been lost to time, his or her Journals are unknown. Maybe the only wrote Black Reflections, and their family declined the publishing of such? Maybe it was a colossal joke that, even now, is being played upon the Ostrian populace. Whatever the case may be, the Scholars of this group flatly deny that the bones ever belonged to a real creature.

I like to believe that it was a living thing, once, though. After all, we now know that we're not quite as informed as we otherwise believed ourselves to be. Why would it be so impossible to imagine that the world once held creatures of all shapes and sizes that lived and died long before we arrived on scene?

And for that matter...when did we arrive, anyway?

It has been a busy few weeks, interspersed with a few moments of genuine fun. I have sent a great deal of letters - letters to artisans, letters of business, and letters to friends as well as soon-to-be friends. With all of them, things are in motion but for me, myself, I am currently within the waiting stage. That can be frustrating for anyone, but I believe I am good at exercising patience. And patience, I do believe, is considered by many to be a virtue.

Speaking of virtues, and things that have happened to me leading up to the penning of this, I have been warned and I have been reprimanded. In both cases, I understand why each man said to me what they did. Each were concerned for me, body and soul. At least, I am relatively certain one was showing a shred of worry for my body, while I am positive the other felt a genuine care for my immortal spirit. And, in both cases, I am more than sure each of them was trying to dissuade me from the path that I am on. It is no doubt a source of chagrin for the both of them that, even as I acknowledged their words, I would not be swayed from my course. What's more, I have the strong feeling that my own words of assurance do not hold as much water with either of them as I might wish. That is nothing I can help, and again, must look to patience as my crutch. Perhaps with time I will be seen differently in their eyes. And for the better, of course.

I did, however, note that I had fun. My life is not all the drudgery of daily business and disappointing expectations or ruining the hopes and dreams of others. (I write this in jest...sort of. The dashing of such was- maybe I never should have wrote any of that. Too late now, though. I don't believe in censorship, though I won't proceed with this folly). I spent an evening at the Golden Hart, where I met several pleasant individuals with whom I hope to seek further acquaintance in the future. Princess Valencia Velenosa was a charming and attentive hostess, while I found the rest of my company to be great conversation. Lord Lorien Keaton can expect that dinner invitation before too long, while I hope to find the opportunity to speak with Marquessa Quenia Igniseri at greater length in the near future.

I can't say I have ever savored sailing through a winter storm, but it is a relief to get back to what I do best after a winter of parties and gatherings. I do love being in my element and doing the work I have trained for. Not to say parties aren't delightful, but it matters little how nice I look in a dress really.

May your hopes find safe harbors.

I was the first one unhorsed in the joust, which was a little off-putting, but I hope to fare better in the upcoming Melee. It'll be huge!

Relationship Note on Katarina

Much like my wife and I, Princess Katarina and I sometimes have differing opinions. Similar to my wife and I though, we're able to have differing outlooks and opinions, while still respecting those of the other party. That is a good friendship. I prefer people who have their own opinions, rather than flock to the most popular opinion of the day.

This is why I respect her.

Yesterday was filled with all manner of greatness. It is days like those that truly make me grateful to the gods for my lot in life. The day began in meeting Lord Wash Kennex, a romantic legend that I'd heard tale of all the way back in Apsfel Falls. As to what it was like to actually meet the man in the flesh, well, let us simply say that tales and truth are interesting bedfellows. That meeting turned to a late brunch, and while hosting him, the exquisite Lady Khanne Halfshav came for a visit. She is a shaman! I had never really had a chance to discuss what all that entails, but before we could get into it, it was time for the Jousting Finals at the Tournament of Roses.

The event was incredible, the competitors truly outdid themselves to the glory of Gloria and Limerance. That there were so many Valardin competing, AND that our own vassal, Sir Tarrant Moore made it to the last round was thrilling in the extreme. He has proven himself a brilliant sportsmen, demonstrating grace and good sportsmanship at every turn, I could not be prouder to call him vassal. Lady Jael also showed a remarkable gift and I could not be prouder to be HER vassal. And of course, the champion himself, Master Tristan... what can one say but how impressive he is! Princess Katarina, riding with Keaton's favor made such a good effort -- she inspires me to pledge that next year I will be on the lists myself!

After the Tournament we threw an impromptu feast for Sir Tarrant, and Lady Khanne regaled us all with what it means to be a shaman. There were so many interesting things being said I could barely keep it all separate when the final miracle of the night happened. I felt my baby moving within me for the first time. I admit, the first sensation made think I was about to shame myself in front of company, but when I put a hand over my stomach and I felt the movement again, my heart nearly stopped. I can only offer sincere apologies to those there for my abrupt flight, but I had to be alone with Kael to share the miracle with him.

The Littlest Keaton is moving. This is really happening. We are going to be parents.

I am the luckiest Arvan alive.

Relationship Note on Tarrant

Sir Tarrant Moore must be recognized for his performance at the Tournament of the Roses. This knight, unknown to us within Arx mere months ago, has come forward to make his claim as a contender. He has shown us what it means to put your whole heart into something. He acknowledged every opponent on the field with respect and took his defeat with good sportsmanship. Well done, Sir Tarrant! House Keaton is honored to count House Moore amongst its vassals.
